Work Schedule and Hours
Typical hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with extensive travel to partner school districts, Appalachian State University and council meetings as necessary. Occasional evenings, weekends, and overnight stays on campus during summer months will be required to meet the needs of this position and the grant. Work for this position may at times involve after hours meetings and events.

Position Summary
The GEAR UP Coordinator will supervise and coordinate all University pre-college outreach programs under the GEAR UP grant, which includes facilitating the Junior Bulldog Program. The GEAR Up Coordinator must be a collaborative self-starter who has the ability to bridge organizational (internal and external) boundaries.
UNC Asheville is a partner institution on Appalachian State University's Gaining Early Awareness of Undergraduate Programs ( GEAR UP) grant. This position serves as the lead for GEAR UP and serves as the University's campus liaison for all grant partners.
The GEAR Up Coordinator will be empowered to develop strategic programming and resources that strengthen UNC Asheville's focus on college access and success.
This is a grant funded position that is contingent upon annual funding renewal, with an anticipated end date of September 30, 2031.
FLSA Exempt
Required Education/Experience/Skills
A Bachelor's degree and three to four years of directly related experience in a University and/or public school setting is required.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

  • A Master's degree and at least four to six years' experience working at a University and within public school systems is preferred.
  • Past experience working in primary or secondary education in the development or implementation of outreach programs is highly desired. The ideal candidate will be familiar with UNC Asheville and counties in Western North Carolina. Past experience coordinating college and career readiness programs is essential.
  • Consideration will also be given to candidates with demonstrated experience or potential for leadership in serving our institution's efforts in pedagogy, programming and service activity.
  • Candidates with experience or demonstrated potential in teaching science to and developing outreach activity for diverse student populations are especially encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the mission and strategic goals of UNC Asheville.
  • Knowledge of middle and high school systems within WNC and the various counties where these schools are located.
  • Ability to make connections across a variety of programs and services in order to provide the best outreach for middle and high school aged youth.
  • Ability to transcend departmental and disciplinary boundaries in order to leverage University resources and talent.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to connect with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Ability to develop and deliver various programs, training and services to a wide range of populations.
  • Strategic and innovative approaches to college access and success work are vital.
