The UT System Administration is primarily based in Austin, Texas. Purpose of Position

Directs institutional research taking place within System Administration. Directs the business intelligence functions and provides robust analytical support for the executive director and System administrative offices. Implements and manages ongoing initiatives related to the UT System Dashboard, seekUT, and other major projects as assigned. Conducts advanced quantitative analysis of critical higher education issues faced by the University of Texas System, soundly interprets those analyses, and provides clear and straightforward written and/or graphical displays of the findings for a wide variety of audiences. Gives oversight and mentorship to assistant directors, including identifying professional development opportunities for them and staff. Provides guidance to the academic and health institutions on data governance, predictive analytics, machine learning, and data visualization.

Essential Functions

  • Manages the research and business intelligence teams to help promote the alignment of process and priorities. Focuses on ongoing professional development of staff, with the goal of increasing and improving the group's capacity to conduct analyses in a timely and accurate manner, as well as build tools to help UT System leadership make decisions. Manages direct reports and work to allocate tasks evenly across the team driving team performance.
  • Supports the executive director and UT System executives by providing robust analysis of critical issues and takes on special projects as needed. Conducts research studies, including contributing to the analysis of research questions and writeups of project results. Completes ad hoc data requests.
  • Provides oversight on the collection, analysis, and reporting of data for ongoing uses and special requests, with a focus on streamlining requests and reducing the reporting burden on the campuses. Works with assistant directors to ensure established quality control processes are followed consistently and to identify any needed improvements. Oversees the maintenance of the UT System Dashboard and seekUT.
  • Represents the executive director at meetings and on projects as assigned.
  • Translates available data and analysis into relevant and timely messages for use in internal and external communications. This includes overseeing production of regular and special reports and overseeing the development of new avenues of communication.
  • Designs and develops a research approach that utilizes sound and appropriate methodology, both inferential and descriptive, for the specific research question for UT System administration and the 13 institutions.
  • Researches and stays current with the literature and industry best practices in higher education and data science. Monitors trends in higher education at the national, state, and institutional level in order to work with the associate vice chancellor to identify the topics for new research studies. Stays informed about System wide initiatives and goals, as well as campus level initiatives, and collaborates with UT System and institutional colleagues to work strategically to align research project goals with those broader initiatives.
  • Provide oversight of the administrative operations of the office on behalf of the executive director, including the budget, the accounts, and the staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of topics in higher education, such as institutional research and planning, student outcomes, faculty productivity and teaching, research expenditures and activity, institutional productivity and efficiency, etc.
  • Project management skills and the ability to lead collaborative research and business intelligence teams.
  • Candidates should have experience in conducting research and analyzing quantitative information with an eye towards communications and policy evaluation and development.
  • Knowledge of ETL processes and key data warehousing concepts. Ability to ensure that the use of business intelligence applications enhances business decision-making capabilities.
  • Experience effectively analyzing, integrating, and clearly communicating complex ideas at the conceptual, strategic, and tactical levels.
  • Analytic experience should include a full range of professional statistical work, such as sampling, survey response bias analysis, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, linear regression, regression, logistic regression, HLM, survival analysis, and cluster analysis.
  • Experience in creating models utilizing both supervised and unsupervised machine learning as a data scientist is required.
  • The ability to effectively communicate and navigate and maintain a consistent and effective presence in the larger community of internal and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent in a social science discipline, educational research, or a closely related field and seven (7) years of experience in institutional research in higher education, public administration, or equivalent position in the private sector OR Bachelor's degree in a social science discipline, educational research, or a closely related field and ten (10) years of experience in institutional research in higher education, public administration, or equivalent position in the private sector.
  • Five (5) years of experience conducting analytical and policy studies that support decision making and planning.
  • Experience analyzing data from national and state database higher education systems.
Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in a social science discipline, educational research, or a closely related field.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in institutional research in higher education or equivalent position in the private sector.
  • Eight (8) years of experience conducting analytical and policy studies that support decision making and planning.
  • Established record of publications and presentations.

Additional Information

The standard retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. However, the incumbent of this position may elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in either TRS or ORP is mandatory.
