The University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Microbiology and Immunology seeks a Visiting Research Scientist who will focus on research and scientific techniques elucidating polymicrobial interactions in the gastrointestinal tract, specifically between Candida albicans and Salmonella Typhimurium. The position will conduct research, develop experimental protocols and devise methods to apply scientific principles and theories in research projects.

Job Duties
Design experiments related to polymicrobial interactions in the gastrointestinal tract using tissue culture models, conventional and gnotobiotic mice, molecular analyses, histopathology, and high-throughput omics technologies (RNAseq, metabolomics).
Perform molecular and cellular experiments to understand molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions using cell culture, molecular biology and biochemistry tools, cell-based assays, and gnotobiotic and conventional mouse models.
Engage in laboratory research, analyze data and information, evaluate and report findings to PI.
Oversee and mentor postdoctoral fellows and doctoral and medical student trainees; participate in the oversight of laboratory activities.
Write grant applications for extramural funding; prepare and submit research reports describing findings.
Author publications in peer-reviewed journals, make presentations of papers to professional societies and develop new designs or techniques that are of material significance in the solution of important applied programs.

PhD or MD in Bacterial Physiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, or related field required. A minimum of 3 years' post P.hD. or MD related research experience required. Previous experience working with fungi and bacteria is a must. Experience in mouse models and tissue culture is also a requirement.

Experience in maintenance of germ-free mice is desired.
