About Housing and Residential Life

HRL manages all aspects of university housing, including operations, maintenance, and residential life initiatives.

The Role

The Director of Housing Facilities assumes full responsibility for HRL facility operations, including maintenance, custodial, and capital projects (both minor and major). This position oversees the planning, staffing, directing, and management of all housing facility operations while ensuring compliance with safety and training standards. This leader serves as a key member of the HRL management team, directing construction and alteration projects, establishing preventive maintenance programs, coordinating emergency repair services, and managing a multi-skilled facilities workforce. In the absence of the Executive Director of Housing and Residential Life, the Director stands in to make operational decisions for the department.

This position provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life, maintaining a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communications and service efforts.

Your Day Will Likely Include:

    Leading and coordinating the managerial and administrative operations of the HRL Facilities Unit (including Custodial Services and Maintenance).
  • Partnering with the Executive Director and senior leadership to develop and implement strategic goals.
  • Managing construction and maintenance projects, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • Overseeing staffing functions including hiring, training, evaluation, and performance management.
  • Managing facilities budgets, resource allocation, and project cost controls.
  • Building strong relationships with campus stakeholders and ensuring high-quality customer service.

Experience You Will Bring to the Organization:

  • Bachelor's degree required; 7+ years of housing, student services, or related university experience strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of facilities management experience required.
  • Experience managing custodial services and budget administration.
  • Experience supervising in a unionized environment strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of safety and risk mitigation in facilities operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ADA, and California building codes (Titles 19, 22, and 24).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, facility management software, and StarRez.

Physical Summary:

This position involves moderate physical activity, including lifting up to 40 pounds and working in varied environments-from mechanical spaces to outdoor areas. The role may involve exposure to heat, odors, or fumes, and occasional work during off-hours to address emergencies.

Licenses/Certificates:

Valid California driver's license (required).

OSHA certifications preferred.

Compensation:

Hiring Range: $120,000 - $142,000 annually, commensurate with education, experience, and skills.
