Position Summary

The University of New Mexico's (UNM) School of Engineering (SoE) has an opening for a Lecturer of Integrative Engineering. This position is a full-time, 9-month, teaching-track faculty position. The desired start date is August 2026.

The appointed faculty member will initially teach within first-year courses in the SoE. Within the SoE "engineering" includes engineering, computer science, and construction management. We developed and piloted an interdisciplinary, project-based, first-year engineering course, which we intend to expand to accommodate all incoming first-year SoE students. This course provides a common, integrative first-year experience that engages, prepares, and retains students within the SoE. The appointed faculty member will also have future teaching and course design roles in a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Engineering, with an emphasis on courses focused on design and professional skill development. Additional course offerings may include those focused on engineering discipline-specific introductory material; communication and AI; engineering applications of mathematics; and computer programming. Design courses in these programs would address a variety of interdisciplinary problems of our day with an emphasis locally relevant topics for New Mexico, from climate and the energy transition to engineering in world/regional health.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the faculty hire are teaching within the First-Year Engineering and Integrative Engineering programs. The teaching load is set in accordance with the rank of Lecturer III at UNM and within the housed SoE program. A reduced teaching load may accommodate additional requested assistance with running the First-Year Engineering and Integrative Engineering course logistics and/or conducting program evaluation and research.

The appointed faculty member will work closely with and report to the Director of First-Year Engineering and Integrative Engineering, and they will collaborate across all SoE academic departments, with SoE leadership, and with our Engineering Student Success Center. Together with this team and through these first-year engineering and integrative engineering initiatives, the appointed faculty will help enact the SoE's strategic objectives to improve student success pathways (goal 1) and build a culture of equity and inclusive excellence (goal 3).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, or a
    related field.
  • Experience with teaching relevant courses (e.g., undergraduate, first-year, engineering design).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and a record of innovation in interdisciplinary engineering and/or first-year engineering.
  • Experience in designing, teaching, and assessing SoE courses, with a preference for experience teaching design, project-based courses, and/or interdisciplinary engineering courses.
  • A commitment to student success and innovative curriculum pathways.
  • An understanding of the assets students (e.g., UNM SoE students) from a variety of backgrounds bring to their learning, and the tools to build on those assets in the classroom so that all may succeed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and collaboration skills, including working with staff and faculty across roles and backgrounds.
  • Familiarity or experience with engineering education research and/or scholarship of teaching and learning in ways that can advance engineering learning and student success at UNM. While this job does not include research as a primary aspect of the role, it is preferable for the individual to be able to contribute to research projects and apply findings effectively in the classroom.
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
