Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Human Genetics Institute, in the Xing Lab. The successful candidate will be involved in computational biology, particularly in analyzing high-throughput sequencing data derived from human and mouse samples.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.
  • Performs computational biology data analysis.
  • Maintains accurate records of methods, software, and parameters used. Ensure reproducibility.
  • Handles Reports/presentations of data analysis.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience. An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques,
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • Requires knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.
  • Must understand the fundamentals of the genetics.
  • Must read and understand technical documents.
  • Must perform basic scientific routines, protocols, and tests and articulate data to researchers.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
  • Must be able to use Linux computing servers in with a command-line interface.
  • Must be able to perform computational analysis using programming languages, such as Python and R.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree in genetics or related life-sciences fields with training in computational biology, genomics, and gene regulatory mechanisms.
  • Bachelor's degree in genetics or a related life-sciences field.
  • A minimum of one year research study experience carrying out research protocols.
  • Experience in high-throughput sequencing data analysis.
  • Experience in computational pipeline comparison, testing, and development.
  • Proficiency in Linux command lines and programming languages, such as Python and R.

Equipment Utilized
  • Connecting to remote Linux computing servers and HPC clusters via a lab workstation.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
