What to Expect
Tesla is looking for a Distributed Systems Engineer to build an edge software and hardware platform for Tesla Megapack servicing and local data. This role bridges cloud and embedded systems, defining the future of edge databases and infrastructure for the rapidly scaling industrial Tesla Energy business. Our work supports Tesla's Megapack Certified Service Provider (CSP) program, a program that empowers sophisticated customers and third-party service providers to perform service on Megapack systems. We are a high-impact, fast-paced team that values curiosity, learning, mentorship, open discourse, and collaboration, with a direct impact on Tesla's mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. You'll collaborate with other Energy Engineering teams for the newest Energy projects like Megapack 3. You'll work with and deepen your expertise in Rust, Kubernetes, NATS, DuckDB, SQLite, protocols like OPC UA and MQTT. If you enjoy scaling software systems, systems thinking, and tackling engineering and product challenges, this role is for you.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, maintain and operate hardware, software, and data platforms that store and query hundreds of Megapacks' data in constrained edge environments
- Characterize and solve complex problems related to the scalability, reliability, performance, and security of production systems
- Test the performance, scalability, and reliability of software systems at scale, including developing the services to support this testing
- Provide technical leadership, foster collaboration through in-office meetings and pair programming, and drive initiatives to completion
- Learn from pilot sites and early customers to inform the future of the platform
- Maintain the values of the team which include engineering excellence, curiosity, a bias for action, self-awareness, inclusivity, and vulnerability
What You'll Bring
- 4+ years of relevant industry experience
- Strong CS fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems
- Systems programming skills including multi-threading, concurrency, etc. Fluency in Rust and experience with Kubernetes, NATS, DuckDB, SQLite, and industrial communication protocols are a plus
- A product mindset in engineering work to deliver a high-quality customer experience for Certified Service Provider users
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Eagerness to prototype, work on early-stage projects, and learn from pilots
- Security and networking experience are a plus

Expected Compensation
$140,000 - $252,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
