The Bancroft School is seeking a dedicated Teacher Assistant to provide support to classroom Teachers in planning and implementing instruction tailored to the educational needs of assigned students. This role encourages and supports students to help them achieve the best possible educational experience. Depending on the program, the Teacher Assistant may also serve as a substitute for a One-to-One Education Program Associate or Teacher, as needed.



Responsibilities

    Under the direction of Teacher(s) and following regulations defined by the N.J. Department of Education (DOE) and Core Curriculum Content Standards, and N.J. Department of Vocational Education, established procedures within the Schools and Pediatric Facility, and applicable state/local/federal regulations, assists in the planning and implementation of classroom instruction within an assigned area of functional, developmental, vocational, and/or transitional curriculum in elementary or secondary education in accordance with the Individual Education Plan (IEP):
  • Provides assistance to Teacher in planning classroom curriculum and implements plans to meet the physical, emotional, and educational needs of students;
  • Provides assistance to Teacher for the assessment of students' abilities and capabilities; aids in the development and implementation of lesson plans and activities that are individual-specific, meet the learning needs of students, encourage increased skills, and address specific IEP goals;
  • Assists Teacher in establishing and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to maximum academic and social learning by maintaining order and guiding students to socially appropriate behavior;
  • Assists Teacher in the proper utilization of classroom equipment and materials. Makes recommendations to Teacher regarding the purchase and usage of new supplies and curriculum materials. May utilize approved cleaning solutions to clean toys/equipment after each use;
  • Under direction of Teacher, observes and tracks student behavior, gathers behavioral data, performs calculations, and creates graphic illustrations for review by Teachers, clinical-specific staff, etc., to identify and monitor student proficiency and performance levels, to support modifications to current educational program or medication, etc.;
  • Provides ongoing assistance to teachers in the management of individual behavior of students to create and maintain a safe and secure classroom environment. Reports any safety hazards, property damage, etc., to Teacher;
  • Works with Teacher in the utilization of instructional resources and teaching strategies; willingly shares ideas and instructional resources with other classroom staffs

2. Works directly with all students in accordance with established levels of supervision, the IEP, and the established behavior plan:

  • Works with students and provides tutoring in social, vocational, and educational skills necessary for development;
  • Instructs, prompts, and/or assists students in the achievement of educational goals while actively encouraging the independence of each person within his/her ability limit while following the IEP and individual behavior plan;
  • Accompanies students, provides guidance, and participates in school-related activities; e.g., class trips, extracurricular activities, meals, etc. Provides assistance to Teacher in the planning and oversight of recreational activities and educational trips for students;
  • May transport students from room to classroom and vice versa with proper medical equipment.
  • Serves as an advocate for all students and provides assistance in the event of behavioral and/or academic problems to contribute to a timely resolution.

3. Dependent upon the program and in the absence of the assigned One-to-One Education Program Associate for a student, may substitute for the One-to-One Education Program Associate and work directly with the individual student.



Qualifications

Associates degree in a related field or 30 college credits required. NJDOE substitute teacher's certification required. Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
