Dr. Schroeder in the Veterinary Population Medicine Department in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota is seeking a Researcher to participate in research on virology, biodiversity, pathology, and genomics - in particular, running a newly estalished assay developed in the Schroeder Lab that quickly confirms the presence of live viruses in samples. The person will also perform virus isolation in the BSL-2 Schroeder Lab and the secure BSL-3 Veterinary Isolation Facility at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Minnesota. Work in the Schroeder lab continues to apply molecular tools to enhance virus detection and surveillance; to better understand the impact of viruses on honey bees, swine, dairy cattle and wild-life; secure and improve agricultural productivity through an improved understanding of virus transmission in production systems. The successful candidate will also support students in both the BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs.

Responsibilities:
80% - Conduct research and provide technical assistance to the PI, postdocs, students, and trainees in the lab on areas of virology, molecular data analysis, cell culturing, PCR, sequencing and other miscellaneous problems related to animal virology

10% - Work with PI in the general maintenance of key equipment in the lab

5% - Perform miscellaneous laboratory and office duties as assigned by Dr. Schroeder including, but not limited to, ordering supplies and reagents and help the PIs in the organization and coordination of meetings and projects

5% - Attend, participate, or present at laboratory meetings, seminars, graduate and undergraduate lectures, and conferences as needed

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Microbiology or related field and 4 years experience working in a microbiology/ molecular biology research lab ; or combination of education and work experience to equal eight (8) years.
  • Experience in microbiology, sterile lab techniques
  • Experience maintaining documentation of procedures and experimental data in a logical and organized manner
  • Ability to collaborate respectfully with other members of the laboratory, learn, and to take direction from personnel at all levels
About the Department

The Veterinary Population Medicine department (VPM) specializes in population and individual animal medicine focusing on large animals' health and production, biomedical science, and ecosystem and public health. Our faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans. Faculty provide clinical instruction in medicine, diseases, surgery, production medicine, public health and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and are home to faculty in clinics, epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. Faculty members provide clinical services for animals, diagnostic services to animal owners, and continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $27.45/hour- $28.41/hour depending on education/qualifications/experience
