Mechanical Design Associate

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
United States, California, Berkeley
1 Cyclotron Road (Show on map)
Oct 20, 2025

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is seeking a Mechanical Design Associate to join its Engineering Division. In this role, you will play an integral part in supporting multidisciplinary scientific and engineering teams by transforming conceptual ideas into complete 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models and detailed 2D drawings. These models and drawings are critical to the manufacturing, fabrication, and integration of parts, assemblies, and subassemblies used in a wide range of research and development projects.

In this position, you will work closely with engineers, scientists, and technicians, applying mechanical engineering principles through the use of CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools. Your work will ensure that design intent is accurately conveyed, components are practical and manufacturable, and systems are effectively integrated into larger assemblies.

This is an opportunity to contribute to innovative, mission-driven work at the forefront of science and technology.

What You Will Do:

  • Design mechanical, mechatronic, and opto-mechanical systems to support LBNL's scientific mission.
  • Develop 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings from initial concepts using mechanical engineering principles.
  • Apply GD&T to convey design intent through detailed technical drawings.
  • Assist in creating work instructions to support fabrication and assembly.
  • Reverse-engineer existing or legacy equipment and update CAD models as needed.
  • Provide regular updates to peers, leads, and supervisors on task progress.
  • Participate in design reviews and implement changes through controlled revisions.
  • Collaborate with engineers and fabricators to ensure functionality and manufacturability.
  • Manage design data using PLM tools, including BOMs and revision history.
  • Maintain organized CAD files aligned with LBNL standards.
  • Support prototype builds, part verification, and vendor communication as needed.

What is Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a CAD-based mechanical design environment.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Creo Parametric/Direct, SolidWorks, or Inventor.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) tools such as Windchill, SAP, or Siemens Opcenter Quality.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical engineering and manufacturing principles.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T standards (ASME Y14.5M and/or ISO 1101) with the ability to apply them in technical drawings.
  • Ability to translate conceptual designs, including hand sketches, into detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD software.
  • Comfortable collaborating with multidisciplinary teams-including mechanical, electrical, and magnetic engineers-to define and develop mechanical designs based on specifications and operational concepts.
  • Strong adaptability and willingness to learn and apply new tools, techniques, and technologies.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with engineers, scientists, and technical staff.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail in design documentation.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines.
  • Knowledge in one or more specialized areas such as reverse engineering, 3D cabling and piping layouts, 3D printing, opto-mechanical systems, mechatronics, vacuum systems, structural supports, or design for manufacturability/assembly.
  • Ability to assist in developing work instructions to support fabrication and integration.
  • Familiarity with LBNL's engineering design standards and the use of PLM systems to store CAD models and related documents.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical field and extensive professional experience in mechanical design.
  • Experience using Creo Parametric for 3D mechanical design.
  • Proficient with PTC Windchill product lifecycle management (PLM) software.
  • Relevant technical certification, including ASME Y14.5M GD&T at the technical or professional level.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The expected salary for this position is $95,000 - $116,000, which fits into the full salary of $84,552 - $142,716 annually depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. A REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
