Position Overview We are seeking an accomplished Director of LIS Software Engineering to lead the ongoing development and modernization of Exact Sciences' next generation Laboratory Information System (LIS). This platform underpins our laboratory and diagnostic operations and is critical to advancing the company's mission in oncology and molecular diagnostics. This role requires a leader who combines deep technical expertise with strategic leadership skills, bringing strong software engineering experience in regulated biomedical environments. You will define architecture and execution plans, lead engineering teams, and partner across functions to deliver reliable, compliant, and scalable LIS solutions. Essential Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Strategic Leadership: Define and own the target architecture and roadmap for the LIS platform, ensuring scalability, security, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Technical Excellence: Oversee the design and delivery of cloud-native, high-availability systems that support complex laboratory workflows and ensure data integrity.
- Biomedical Integration: Partner with clinical and laboratory operations to align LIS capabilities with molecular testing and oncology diagnostics needs.
- Compliance & Quality: Ensure LIS software meets HIPAA, CLIA/CAP, FDA, and internal QMS standards; embed security- and privacy-by-design into all solutions.
- Engineering Enablement: Establish and advance modern engineering practices, including API-first and event-driven architectures, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, and DevOps automation.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Security, Data, Enterprise Architecture, and Operations to ensure LIS supports scientific, clinical, and business priorities.
- People & Culture: Lead and grow a diverse, high-performing team; foster inclusion, accountability, mentorship, and professional development.
- Vendor & Partner Oversight: Manage external relationships to ensure quality, value, and compliance.
- Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
- Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
- Ability and means to travel between Exact Sciences locations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a field related to the essential duties of the job; or High School Degree/General Education Diploma and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree.
- 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience.
- 5+ years of experience in a senior leadership role.
- Proven success leading distributed (onshore/nearshore/offshore) engineering teams.
- Demonstrated experience with cloud-native architectures (AWS/Azure), microservices, and high-availability platforms.
- Strong leadership of distributed teams and cross-functional delivery.
- Track record of implementing CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, and SRE practices
- Experience in regulated environments (e.g., SOX, HIPAA, CLIA, GCP, FDA, ISO-13485).
- Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with LIS or comparable biomedical platforms.
- Background in oncology diagnostics or molecular testing (PCR, NGS).
- Familiarity with HL7/FHIR standards and diagnostic interoperability.
- Experience leading company-wide modernization or transformation initiatives.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Expertise in cloud cost optimization and vendor management.
- Proven success delivering large-scale biomedical or laboratory software solutions in human or veterinary diagnostics environments.

Salary Range: $182,000.00 - $309,000.00
The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
