The Rajan Lab in the Basic Sciences Division at Fred Hutch is seeking a Research Technician III to serve as the lab's fly stock specialist. This role is essential for sustaining the lab's research infrastructure following the departure of a senior scientist, and it will ensure that projects across the lab can progress without interruption. The Research Technician III will take a lead role in maintaining and building Drosophila genetic stocks, coordinating stock management operations, and providing technical support in imaging-based assays.



Responsibilities

    Oversee and train a lab aide responsible for routine stock collection and maintenance.
  • Build and maintain critical Drosophila stocks and generate stable fly lines, maintain lab crosses to support all ongoing research projects.
  • Maintain accurate stock records and ensure quality control in stock management.
  • Contribute advanced imaging expertise to accelerate high-priority projects and ensure rigor in experimental approaches.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot experiments and provide reliable technical support.
  • Ensure compliance with lab safety and institutional protocols.
  • Provide consistent lab presence on a stable schedule to support sustainable operations.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework (or equivalent combination of advanced degree and work experience)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Biology, Genetics, Neuroscience, or a related field.
  • 7 years of research experience in Drosophila genetics and imaging.
  • Previous experience training or overseeing junior staff or students.
  • Background in quantitative imaging and/or molecular techniques.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in fly stock management and genetics (crosses, balancers, complex fly genetics- MARCM, FLP/FRT, maintaining lines).
  • Proficiency in imaging methods (confocal, widefield, or related).
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain a reliable daily presence in the lab.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $69,514 to $104,249, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
