DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, 168 academic appointees, 331 residents, fellow and postdocs and 479 staff personnel.

This position will play an essential part in a growing and dynamic group of scientists making leading-edge discoveries in stem cell and developmental biology. Under supervision, this position will perform duties as a laboratory Research Technician including: 1) culturing human embryonic stem cells, 2) design and make reporter lines with lentivirus, 3) isolation of mouse embryos, 4) tissue processing and histology, 5) spatial transcriptomics and high resolution microscopy, 6) protein detection 7) image analysis and 8) establishing SOPs.

Procedures will include cellular and molecular biology techniques, including the generation of libraries of mRNAs to perform spatial transcriptomics, antibody coupling, virus preparation, tissue culture, mouse embryo extractions, and tissue sample preparation.

The Research Technician will also be involved in monitoring of other personnel, general lab organization and lab oversight, and other tasks as required by the Principal Investigator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical and/or practical knowledge in cellular and molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell or related field as typically attained through a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated experience performing in vivo mouse experiments.

  • Demonstrated experience in performing molecular biology techniques including genetic manipulation, cloning and high resolution imaging and image analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience performing general biochemistry and laboratory techniques such as preparing buffers and solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience in following step based experimental protocols.

  • Solid computer skills using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email system. Demonstrated ability to create and maintain databases, perform standard computer tasks, learn new programs/applications with minimal direction, and exercise fast and accurate typing skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to update and maintain laboratory and technology skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong, demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility in a laboratory environment that interacts with a diverse group of research and technical personnel.

  • Ability to comply with UCSD policies regarding laboratory safety including regulations and methods for handling, cleanup and waste disposal of biohazardous materials.

  • Demonstrated experience with general lab maintenance and organization.

  • Demonstrated skill and ability to keep accurate, organized and through research records.

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials.

  • Demonstrated experience with techniques related with tissue preparation to apply spatial transcriptomis techniques.

  • Experience with spatial transcriptomics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience with multiplexed protein detection.

  • Demonstrated experience with mouse matings and embryo extraction

  • Demonstrated experience with single cell techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience with image analysis preferably using ImageJ.

  • Demonstrated experience working with light, fluorescence and confocal microscopes.

  • Demonstrated experience monitoring other laboratory personnel.

  • Demonstrated experience with cell culture.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must be willing to work with animals, lentivirus, human tissue, and standard hazardous laboratory compounds.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
