HOURLY RATE: $48.00

POSITION SUMMARY:
Has overall responsibility for all facets of weld quality, welder expertise, and performance. This includes screening, qualifying, assessing, and training welders, and supporting the Quality Assurance Manager in the development, administration, and enforcement of weld standards, best practices, and established welding procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible to screen, qualify, assess, and train welders per established procedures.
  • Responsible to perform scheduled recurring welder skill assessments as the basis for categorizing welder skill levels, prioritizing training, and determining opportunities for improvement for each individual welder.
  • Responsible for helping to create and maintain a positive, inclusive work environment for all team Members.
  • Accountable in validating welder assessment results between the Supervisors assessments and those performed by the Welding Supervisor.
  • Responsible to maintain hard copy and electronic records of welder continuity and qualifications.
  • Accountable to provide feedback to Production Management for performance appraisals regarding welder performance, trainability, and adherence to established processes and procedures.
  • Accountable to hold yourself to Vigor Values and promote Vigor Values within leadership and workforce.
  • Responsible to identify trends in weld inspection metrics (defect rates) that will guide additional training to supplement training identified by the welder assessment process.
  • Responsible to develop changes to existing weld procedures, procedure qualifications, and welder qualifications (WPS, PQR, and WPQs).
  • Track and implement welding related changes which improve performance and reduce tack time.
  • Accountable to enforce adherence to weld standards, best practices, and established welding procedures.
  • Responsible for researching and implementing advancements in welding technology, equipment, and materials to promote improvements to safety, ergonomics, and fatigue reduction.
  • Responsible for oversight and evaluation of calibrated welding equipment,working with the maintenance team.


JOB SCOPE:
The position operates within general parameters but must use sound judgment and independent decision making when carrying out job responsibilities. Has the ability to influence and change existing protocols. He/she works with considerable independence following the guidelines and goals identified by the Weld Engineering Manager on assigned projects in order to achieve production goals and benchmarks. Takes daily direction from Sr. Production Manager when needed. Failure to meet deadlines could result in loss of business and rework.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Current position does not require any direct report, although the candidate shall have the ability to act independently or as part of a team in both office and manufacturing environments. This position will be key member of the production team.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
This position maintains a variety of professional relationships and must be able to determine the appropriate level of communication and interaction for various situations and circumstances. The ability to effectively influence decisions through respectful interactions with others both within the organization and outside of the organization is essential in this role.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must have aluminum welding knowledge including GTAW and GMAW for both plate structures and piping and have the ability to hone and refine the welding skill of the work force.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written for constant interaction with all departments and employee levels and outside customers.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
  • Must have the analytical ability to research problem areas and special requests.
  • Must be a well-organized, detail and customer (internal and external) oriented self-starter.
  • Ability to read and comprehend work specifications, work orders, blueprints, contracts and technical publications.
  • Ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines effectively and respond well to last minute, high priority, time sensitive projects.
  • Ability to handle the pressure of constant interruptions.
  • Must be able to organize work within a diverse department and coordinate work with other department managers to maintain efficiency.
  • Must be familiar with budgeting, estimating, planning, scheduling principles.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and other environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of finishes planning.
  • Knowledge of safety practices in a production environment.
  • Knowledge of methods of training and motivating employees to peak performance.
  • Knowledge of ways to create metrics to support operational improvements.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities with independence and good judgment.
  • Ability to mentor others by modeling respectful behaviors.
  • Ability to applying a systems approach to work planning, execution.
  • Ability to apply financial expertise in accomplishing labor-intensive projects.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse management groups.
  • Possess leadership skills including conflict resolution, real-time decision-making, high performance expectations and the capability of inspiring the team to meet them.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • AA degree or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a heavy industrial/fabrication environment with increasing levels of responsibilities.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity with increasing levels of responsibilities.
  • The individual must have experience and thoroughknowledge of production procedures, government regulations, and administrative procedures. He/she must have experience and a working knowledge of all specific operations of the department, including all machinery and tools.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: CWI required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced shipyard with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity in the shipyard. The individual will be required to be in production areas in yard. He/she must be able to walk to and from job sites. The person must be able to climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders; to enter confined areas and tanks; to work at heights. He/she may be required to work more than 8-hour shifts and weekend. The incumbent must be able to frequently bend, squat, crawl, twist and may be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
There may be local travel and out-of-town travel (including air travel) up to 5% of the time with notice. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This position may require occasional travel within the greater metropolitan area. Unless approved by the Manager in advance, mileage accrued within this expected work areas will not be eligible for reimbursement but will be in alignment with Vigor's reimbursement policy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment for this job is demanding and potentially hazardous due to work in or around ship repair yard. The environment contains large hazardous equipment. The nature of the work involves working in extremes of temperature. Some of the work is performed within an office setting.

CITIZENSHIP: Pursuant to a government contract, this specific position requires US citizenship.
