Engineer I - R&D Soft Magnetics Job Summary: We are seeking an entry level mechanical engineer to be a key member of an effort to build expertise and capability in soft magnetic laminations and core assemblies, helping to drive strategic growth at Carpenter. Primary Responsibilities for the Engineer I - R&D Soft Magnetics
- End-to-End Process Ownership: Assisting in executing all stages of stack manufacturing, including cutting, stamping, annealing, coating (organic and oxide), core winding, lamination stacking, bonding, machining, and final assembly. Assist in designing and establishing the sequence of operations, optimize process inputs, and estimate processing costs.
- Process Documentation & Standardization: Maintaining detailed documentation for each process step.
- Assisting in the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and quality across production runs.
- Process Automation: Assisting in research, development, and implementation of automation solutions to improve efficiency, reduce manual intervention, and enhance repeatability in stack manufacturing processes.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Actively troubleshoot process issues, equipment malfunctions, and quality deviations. Apply structured problem-solving techniques to resolve production challenges and prevent recurrence.
- Continuous Improvement: Engaging in day-to-day production support, collaborating with manufacturing staff to identify and implement process improvements. Monitoring existing standards and proactively driving adoption of new technologies and best practices.
- Project Management & Experimentation: Scoping out project needs, design experiments using standard and advanced techniques, and analyzing data to optimize process methods. Support alloy design and product development initiatives by finding optimal methods for new materials.
- Collaboration & Communication: Working closely with cross-functional teams (engineering, manufacturing, product development) and external partners (national labs, universities, consortiums) to jointly develop and evaluate new processes and materials. Preparing technical reports and communicate findings effectively.
- Safety & Compliance: Demonstrating commitment to a zero-injury workplace and uphold company values of dignity, respect, integrity, and ethics in all work and interactions.
Requirements for the Engineer I - R&D Soft Magnetics
- Four-year college degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
- Basic experience in Lean manufacturing environment combined with consistently strong proven performance.
- Entry level position.
- The successful candidate will have practical work experience or studies emphasizing process development and fabrication of rotor and stator stacks.
Preferred Requirements for the Engineer I - R&D Soft Magnetics:
- Familiarity with specific processing techniques related to soft magnetic laminations (Fe-Si, Fe-Co, etc.) is an advantage.
- Must have an understanding of how to achieve and maintain tolerances in a bonded stack and tape wound core.
- Experience with computer-based draft and design tools CAD (e.g. Solidworks).
- Proficient project management skills are essential with demonstrated drive and passion towards project outcomes.
- Ability to make significant individual contribution to attainment of team objectives.
- Must be able to set clear priorities, commit to achieving deliverables, and deliver on commitments on time with above-the-line accountability.
- Ability to recognize, communicate, measure, and implement actions to mitigate technical risks.
- Willing to speak up and speak out but can reach consensus based on information at hand.
- Capable of taking on tough assignments both independently and in team-based settings.
- Strong overall business and people skills, including written and verbal communication skills, and willingness to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
