The Mohs Histotechnologist Senior provides quality Mohs histology services for the Department of Dermatology to all customers within and outside the environment. The Mohs Histotechnologist Senior performs routine histology techniques and problem solves as necessary with direction from supervisor as needed.
Essential Job functions: Leadership Demonstrates the ability to lead as a Mohs Histotechnologist Senior with regard to workflow, scheduling and troubleshooting within the Mohs Histology laboratory. Demonstrates the ability to act as supervisor of the Mohs Histology laboratory in absence of supervisor. Demonstrates the ability to maintain necessary solutions for histology techniques, storing as appropriately required. Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot any irregularities in stains. Demonstrates the ability to keep quality control records of daily staining and equipment maintenance. Grossing Demonstrates the ability to accession and gross fresh tissue specimens for Mohs surgery. Demonstrates the ability to assess tissue for irregularities and texture. Demonstrates the ability to dissect, ink, and map how patient tissue is processed to maintain orientation. Verifies specimen orientation with surgeon as needed. Performs relaxing incisions to facilitate embedding of complete margin. Staining Demonstrates the ability to perform routine H&E staining so results and time for completion are consistent with SOP. Demonstrates troubleshooting capabilities with any irregularities in stains. Demonstrates the ability to maintain necessary solutions, storing as appropriately required. Demonstrates the ability to wash glassware properly and keeps quality controls records of daily staining. Cryotomy Demonstrates the ability to perform routine cryotomy for fresh frozen H & E slides. Demonstrates the ability to complete fresh frozen tissue sectioning within a consistent TAT as established within SOP. Demonstrates the ability to maintain cryostat and other lab equipment with daily routine maintenance. Demonstrates the ability to record all required data for workload and quality control records. Demonstrates the ability to coverslip, label and distributes slides checking that each slide is labeled correctly according to the matching requisition as required. Demonstrates the ability to wash glassware properly as required. Embedding Demonstrates the capabilities to process and embed tissue samples. Demonstrates the ability to orient tissue as protocol dictates. Demonstrates the ability to maintain solutions and equipment involved utilizing quality control records. Filing & Supply Inventory Demonstrates the ability to file slides numerically for proper storage. Demonstrates the ability to pull the appropriate slides as requested. Demonstrates the ability to label slide storage drawers consecutively. Demonstrates the knowledge of appropriate slide storage. Demonstrates the ability to place new supplies in appropriate storage. Demonstrates the ability to restock supplies. Demonstrates the ability to maintain inventory of laboratory supplies using established guidelines to ordering/reordering as needed via the Health System's supply procurement website. Continuing Education Demonstrates the attendance or completion of the required number of hours per year of continuing education including any mandated training required by the Department or VCU Health System. Demonstrates the ability to successfully complete competency assessment within time frame determined within the Department. Miscellaneous Responsibilities Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects in order to support the mission of VCUHS and Department. Provides assistance to team members. Accepts alternate assignments, as required, graciously. Patient Population: Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older) Employment Qualifications: Preferred Education: Licensure/Certification Required: Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HLT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology* *Required within 18 months of promotion to the Mohs Histotechnologist Senior position. Licensure/Certification Preferred: N/A Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of three (3) years of clinical work experience as a Mohs Histotechnologist Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Ability to work independently with direction from Supervisor as indicated. Ability to troubleshoot Mohs laboratory issues.
