Job Summary The Origination Analyst is a key member of the Wholesale Origination team, responsible for supporting the development and execution of energy transactions. This role involves in-depth market analysis, financial modeling, and the creation of proposals for potential clients and counterparties. The ideal candidate will possess a strong analytical skillset, a foundational understanding of energy markets (power, natural gas, renewables, etc.), and excellent communication skills to collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Market Analysis:
- Monitor and analyze real-time and long-term trends in energy markets, including power prices, natural gas fundamentals, renewable energy credit (REC) values, and regulatory changes.
- Research and identify new business opportunities, potential clients, and market inefficiencies.
- Prepare detailed market reports and presentations to inform origination strategy.
Financial Modeling and Valuation:
- Build and maintain complex financial models to evaluate the profitability and risk of potential transactions (e.g., power purchase agreements, tolling agreements, structured deals).
- Perform discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, net present value (NPV) calculations, and scenario analysis to assess deal value.
- Collaborate with trading, risk management, and finance teams to ensure accurate valuation and risk assessment.
Deal Support and Proposal Development:
- Assist in the preparation of proposals, term sheets, and presentations for clients and internal stakeholders.
- Draft and review transaction documents, ensuring accuracy and alignment with approved deal terms.
- Support senior originators in the negotiation process by providing data-driven insights and analysis.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including trading, risk management, legal, credit, and asset management, to facilitate the deal lifecycle from initial concept to final execution.
- Serve as a point of contact for external counterparties and clients as needed, building and maintaining professional relationships.
Reporting and Administration:
- Track and report on the origination pipeline, deal status, and market activities.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all transactions and market information in relevant systems (ie. Salesforce)
Qualifications Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field. A Master's degree or professional certifications (e.g., CFA) is a plus.
Experience:
- 1-3 years of experience in energy, finance, or a highly analytical role. Experience in a trading or origination environment is highly preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong proficiency in financial modeling and valuation techniques.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel is essential. Experience with Python, R, or other programming languages for data analysis is a significant advantage.
- Solid understanding of North American energy markets (e.g., ISOs/RTOs like PJM, ERCOT, CAISO) and their fundamental drivers.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
