DESCRIPTION

Established in 1978 at the UC San Diego Medical Center, the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) combines the benefits of an internationally renowned university with a large academic hospital. The UC San Diego Medical Center and the DEM is leading an effort, funded by the Federal Office of the National Coordinator, to foster data exchange, interoperability, and clinical integration to improve healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes among San Diego County community healthcare providers. The San Diego Beacon Collaborative will focus on expanding pre-hospital emergency field care and electronic information transmission to improve outcomes for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, empowering patients to engage in their own health management through web portal and cellular telephone technology, improving continuity of care for all.

The Senior Research Associate will be responsible for surgical procedures to produce animal stroke models in mice and rats for studies related to molecular mechanisms of stroke brain injury, and for testing brain protective interventions. The incumbent performs confocal and electron microscopic imaging analysis, managing transgenic mouse models. This includes designing, producing, and characterizing gene constructs and transgenic mouse characterization, performing molecular and biochemical analysis such as gene cloning and expression, Western and Northern blotting, ELISA assays, in situ hybridization, etc. Performs research data analysis and creates graphs, writes positions (e.g., materials and methods) of manuscripts, and submits manuscripts for publications.

The program is highly interdisciplinary, utilizing animal surgery, cell culture, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and quantitative histological analysis. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and/or quantitative histological analysis as typically attained by an advanced degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Considerable experience with independent research/evaluation design and protocol development theory, methods, concepts, and techniques.

  • Strong demonstrated ability to make and contribute important original ideas pertaining to the planning, development, modification, and execution of new research studies.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Knowledge of statistical theory and methodology.

  • Expert knowledge of methods and techniques of compiling, analyzing and evaluating statistical and other project/research data.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent scientific research and skills to organize and present such information at conferences and in scientific publications.

  • Extensive experience in writing portions of scientific manuscripts applying knowledge and understanding of the science and research projects relating to interventions.

  • Proven skill to communicate methods and results to provide interpretive information to scientific Investigators from which researchers can draw conclusions.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Skills and experience for performing animal stroke models, cell cultures, gene cloning and expression, Western blotting, confocal and electron microscopic analysis is preferred.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $66,441 - $106,839 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.82 - $51.17

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
