The Junior Farm Technician plays an important role in executing applied field research and development (R&D). They will assist with validation of commercial whole acre solutions to support and drive the vision to create a world-class Innovation farm, that showcases Nutrien's capabilities and drives rapid adoption of locally validated solutions. Primary responsibilities include the implementation and maintenance of field scale demonstrations including field preparation, planting, cultivation, tillage, pre and post applications, harvest, and data summary.

What you will do:




  • Assist the Farm Manager with completing objectives while focusing on the implementation of new ideas in agronomical sound ways.
  • Oversee and implement various field trials and demonstrations in corn and soybeans.
  • Field preparation, planting, tillage, pre- and post-applications, harvest, and data summaries.
  • In season data collection including soil and plant samples, storage, and shipment.
  • Maintain all equipment and facilities in accordance with applicable SOPs in a safe, clean, and organized manner.
  • Operate and maintain a wide range of commercial farm equipment including but not limited to combines, tractors, sprayers, tillage, planting equipment, UTV's, mowers, and both gas and battery powered landscaping equipment.
  • Operate and maintain a company vehicle.
  • Follow all safety programs, maintain training, and compliance with the Nutrien Innovative Farm.
  • Provide guidance and/or oversee seasonal farm staff.
  • Assist in preparing and conducting all plot tours, field days, and training events. Including event set up and clean up.
  • Snow removal management including plowing, salting walkways, cleaning floors, placing wet floor signs, etc.
  • Collaborate with strategic partners on trial design, implementation of demonstrations, and showcasing physical and digital products and systems.
  • Assist at other Innovation Farm sites as needed.
  • Increased work hours during specific peak seasons and event seasons anticipated.

What you will bring:




  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, weed science or related field; experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.


    • Advanced degree in agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, weed science or related discipline preferred.


  • 2+ years of related experience required, preferably in consultative agronomic experience and/or production farming or experimental management of row crops.
  • Illinois crop pesticide license (Commercial Pesticide Applicator)
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience in field plot techniques, crop husbandry, and knowledge of modern agricultural practices.
  • Ability and experience operating commercial farm equipment.
  • Effectively demonstrated self-motivation, assertiveness, initiative, and results orientation.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with or the ability to learn Precision software such as Echelon.
  • Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) certification and Current pesticide application license preferred.
  • Active participation in one or more professional agricultural organizations preferred.
  • FAA part 107 drone certification preferred.


Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for this role, in Champaign, IL, is between $59,200 - $101,400 annually. While we provide this range as general guidance, several factors are taken into consideration when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, candidate skill set, experience and training, licensure and certifications, work location, and other business and organizational needs. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.

In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our program(s) where discretionary pay out of awards is reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee. Details will be discussed through the application process.
