Class A CDL Driver - Part-Time Pool Hourly Rate: $23.00 This position is an on-campus, part-time, 19 hours-per-week appointment based in Champaign, Illinois. The purpose of the Class A CDL Pathfinder Driver is to safely transport and operate the mobile career unit (Cobra Pathfinder) to support college programming and career exploration activities for diverse audiences. This position's primary responsibility is driving and maneuvering a fifth-wheel camper to designated locations within Parklands District 505 (Illinois). In addition to transportation, the driver is responsible for setting up and securing the Cobra Pathfinder at Parkland College events, ensuring it is ready for use by staff and participants. Weekends and weekday evenings may be required in response to CCE events, community activities, and other college-sponsored activities. Essential Job Functions
- Safely operate a truck and 5th wheel camper. This includes, but is not limited to, towing the 5th wheel to schools and events within Parkland's District 505. Some out of district travel may be required.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the truck and mobile vehicle to ensure they are in good working order. Report any maintenance issues to the CCE Director.
- Plan and follow efficient routes to minimize travel time and fuel consumption, avoiding underpasses under 13' 6" clearance.
- Adhere to all safety regulations, traffic laws, and Parkland College policies.
- Maintain accurate logs of working hours and vehicle service records.
- Complete all necessary paperwork and documentation accurately and on time.
- In coordination with the Director of Career and Community Engagement and the Career Specialist, actively participate in on and off campus event setup, featuring Parkland's mobile career exploration vehicle.
Minimum Requirements
- A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL A).
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- A clean driving record as verified by an MVR.
- A commitment to safe driving.
- Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, FMSCA compliant driving and safety performance history, and exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act
- Must pass an IDOT drug screen and physical and meet IDOT driving standards (CDL Drivers are subject to random drug tests per IDOT regulations).
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions, squat, lift, move, push, and pull heavy objects, climb in and out of the vehicle, stand for long periods of time, and operate controls and equipment.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to listen effectively and respond accordingly.
- Must be available to travel throughout Parkland College District 505 and occasionally out of district travel that may require staying overnight at location.
- Demonstrates a high level of cultural competency.
- In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
Physical Requirements
- Movement: Position requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting. May occasionally involve climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Lifting/Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Occasionally, moving activity carts (~200 lbs) requires lifting one end to load into an elevator. Pushing/pulling of heavy carts or equipment is required.
- Manual Dexterity: Role involves repetitive hand/arm movements, fine motor skills for typing and equipment use, and operation of machinery (e.g., deploying Pathfinder stairs, operating electrical systems, generator, and wheelchair lift).
- Vision/Hearing/Communication: Requires close and distance vision, depth perception, normal hearing, and clear verbal communication.
- Work Environment: Position may involve exposure to heat during outdoor deployments, loud noise, and moving machinery (doors, stairway, wheelchair lift).
