Job Description

Position: Building Controls System Technician I

Nature of Work

Join a team where your technical expertise powers the heart of our campus operations. As a Building Controls System Technician, you'll perform skilled, journeyman-level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of advanced HVAC control systems-including pneumatic, electric, electronic, and direct digital control (DDC) technologies. Your work ensures comfort, efficiency, and sustainability across our facilities.

This role is part of a structured four-step career path, offering clear opportunities for growth. Technicians who demonstrate commitment and competence will advance to Building Controls System Technician II, III, and IV, unlocking new career challenges and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make an impact by installing, repairing, and replacing HVAC control systems that support the daily operations of our buildings.
  • Champion reliability through preventive maintenance and diagnostics on pneumatic, electric, electronic, and DDC systems assuring optimal performance and energy efficiency.
  • Identify, source, and acquire components needed for system repairs and installations.
  • Take pride in maintaining tools and equipment, operating safely, and upholding the highest standards of workmanship.
  • Own your projects by managing materials, preparing cost estimates, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Grow your career by actively engaging in training and skill development to progress to Technician II.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental goals.

Supervision Received
Work is performed under the guidance of a designated supervisor, with instructions provided through verbal communication, written documentation, and technical drawings.

Supervision Exercised
May provide direction and mentorship to team members assisting with tasks, helping build a culture of collaboration and learning.

Shift

7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday

Minimum Qualifications

* A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
* Four years actual work experience and training, including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training, in the HVAC controls trade OR 18 months' experience with completion of vocational education training in desired field.
* Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical codes.
* Skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade.
* Ability on a daily basis to:
- Grasp, lift, maneuver, rotate, and otherwise use small to large trade tools and equipment.
- Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy objects (50 lbs.)
- Grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, lift, and otherwise move equipment, controls, parts, etc.
- Visually assess maintenance, construction and repair needs
- Climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding
* A valid State of Missouri Driver's License must be held and maintained by incumbents in the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and operating commercial or industrial control systems.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $25.00 - $29.00 per hour

Grade: GGS-F
