POSITION SPECIFICS Tenure-line Faculty Positions in Artificial Intelligence The Department of Informatics and Intelligent Systems in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for two tenure-line faculty positions in Artificial Intelligence (AI) located in State College, Pennsylvania. The appointments will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank and will begin in July of 2026 at the University Park campus. We seek to build on the strengths of the department in AI, including causal inference, computer vision, human-centered and socially responsible AI, knowledge representation, machine learning, natural language processing, multi-agent systems, AI ethics, and/or transformative AIapplications that tackle major scientific and/or societal challenges. We seek scholars who complement our existing strengths, and bring expertise in core areas of AI, or bridge fundamental research in AI with transformative applications in the sciences, healthcare, security, critical infrastructure, public policy, the humanities, and/or social sciences. The department is home to Penn State's newly launched undergraduate B.S. degree in Artificial Intelligence Methods and Applications (AIMA) and offers the Applied Data Sciences track of a tri-college B.S. degree in Data Sciences. Candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct cutting-edge research, supervise and mentor graduate students, secure external funding to support research activities, engage in service activities at the college and university levels, and collaborate with faculty across the university and industry partners. Candidates will possess a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Informatics, or a closely related discipline before their appointment start date at Penn State. Applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor will demonstrate a potential for research excellence (as demonstrated by publications in top venues), strong potential for securing external funding for research, and potential to contribute to teaching in AI and related areas. Candidates seeking the rank of Associate Professor should have an established record of research excellence, external funding, teaching and curriculum development, and service. Applicants should include i) a cover letter with information about their interests and qualifications for the position; ii) a research statement summarizing past accomplishments and future plans; iii) a teaching statement summarizing teaching philosophy, teaching experience, and teaching interests; iv) a curriculum vitae; and v) contact information for at least three professional references. The Pennsylvania State University is among the top 30 research universities in the United States (and among the top 16 public institutions). The Department of Informatics and Intelligent Systems and the College of Information Sciences and Technology offer fertile grounds for interdisciplinary collaborative research at the interface of computing and other disciplines. Additional collaborative opportunities and extensive resources are offered by the interdisciplinary research institutes - Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (which provides excellent high-performance computing facilities and support), Huck Institute of the Life Sciences, Materials Research Institute, Institute for Energy and the Environment, Social Science Research Institute, and the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and the National Security Institute. The University Park Campus is located in State College, a university town located incentral Pennsylvania. State College offers a vibrant community with excellent schools and outstanding recreational and cultural activities.
