Job Summary:

Provides commercial legal support to NRG Energy, Inc.'s ("NRG") businesses providing retail energy and gas to commercial and industrial (C&I) businesses. This individual will be a team oriented and commercially focused attorney that will be a critical part of the commercial services legal team supporting the C&I business. The attorney will be capable of collaborating frequently with team members, originators, sales personnel, and other stakeholders within the organization, including, maintaining a value-added relationship with commercial, credit, risk, and compliance teams. Day-to-day responsibilities include advising leadership and other stakeholders on legal risks, strategies, and structures for a variety of commercial matters relating to NRG's C&I business. In addition, responsibilities will include reviewing and negotiating large commercial supply agreements, broker agreements and REC agreements. This individual will ideally be highly versatile, self-motivated, and organized individual capable of exercising sound legal and business judgement under time sensitive and fast paced conditions, to deliver a high quality and well-conceived work product that furthers the organization's business objectives.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Structure, draft, negotiate and facilitate commercial and industrial customer gas and electricity supply contracts, NASEBs, and other legal documents related to NRG's C&I business.
  • Provide support and counsel to all functional teams within NRG's C&I business.
  • Maintain knowledge of the laws and regulations governing NRG's C&I business.
  • Advise internal clients, including NRG's senior leaders, on complex business issues, compliance or risk assessment and work to develop business solutions to eliminate corporate risks.
  • Proven track record of exercising sound business and legal judgment, with appropriate attention to detail, with the ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced and high-volume environment
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment.
  • Great leadership skills and strong desire to help grow and manage the team's paralegals.
  • Efficiently work with outside counsel as necessary within budget and/or timing constraints.

Working Conditions:

  • Preferred location is Pittsburg, PA; Princeton, NJ or Houston, TX
  • Limited hybrid work schedule; M-Th in office/Friday WFH
  • Some travel may be required

Minimum Requirements:

  • JD degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law in PA, NJ, TX (or another state)
  • A minimum of five (5) years of combined successful legal experience in a law firm or sophisticated corporate legal department

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the energy supply industry
  • Proven track record of working in a fast-paced environment with a high-volume workload
  • Excellent negotiation, risk assessment and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly to assist a non-legal audience in understanding complex legal and regulatory requirements
  • Clear understanding and adherence to ethical principles, company values, code of conduct and policies
