Job Summary

The Managing Director, Poison Control Center serves as the senior manager and supervisor for the San Francisco Division (poison center) of the California Poison Control System (CPCS). Responsible for the performance and quality of work of Certified Specialists in Poison Information (clinical pharmacists and nurses) and Poison Information Providers. This position requires expertise and experience in clinical toxicology and the management of poisoned patients. Will work closely with the Division Medical Director and the statewide management team of the CPCS. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the poison center including service delivery, physical plant and all applicable policies and procedures as well as accreditation and regulatory requirements and quality improvement activities.

Participates in the development of system-wide clinical and operational guidelines, communicates to the public through the media, works with public health agencies, and participates in teaching and scholarly activities and service to professional organizations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $254,900 - $278,500 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The California Poison Control System (CPCS) is a 24 hour-a-day toxicology informational hotline serving residents statewide in California. It is designated by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority as California's sole poison control center, and is managed by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy.

The CPCS operates from 4 University of California-affiliated answering sites (UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital, University of California Davis Medical Center, Valley Children's Hospital and University of California San Diego Medical Center). The System provides information to approximately 300,000 calls per year. Information is confidentially maintained utilizing a secure, up-to-date computerized medical information system. Poison information is provided to consumers and healthcare professionals by licensed doctors of pharmacy and registered nurses, as well as by Poison Information Providers. The CPCS telephone answering service is linked to a translator service with the capability to access many languages on a 24 hour per day basis. In addition, the CPCS maintains a list of volunteer experts in industrial hygiene, environmental health, botany, mycology, and other related healthcare fields.

Required Qualifications


  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD)
  • California License in Pharmacy, at the time of hiring.
  • Certification (or demonstrated active pursuit of certification) by the American Board of Applied Toxicology or Board Certified in Medical Toxicology through the American Board of Medical Specialties.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in one or a combination of any of the following: post graduate training (could include fellowships, residencies or other programs), clinical toxicology, poison information sciences or related experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as lead/manager/supervisor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
