The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. This list of duties is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all the functions and responsibilities performed.
Position Summary: Under general supervision, the Security Officer is responsible for providing security services to students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. This role includes patrolling University property and ensuring the security of all buildings and grounds. The position requires carrying, and potentially using, handcuffs, an expandable baton, pepper spray, and a firearm as part of the standard uniform and daily duties. Weekend, holiday, and other shift work may be required as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not carry full supervisory responsibilities; however, the Security Officer may occasionally direct groups of students or staff during public safety situations, or provide guidance to work-study students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Patrol campus on foot, observing and assisting students, faculty, and staff; may lead patrol operations as needed.
- Monitor parking areas to ensure normal traffic flow and identify parking violations; may lead parking enforcement efforts.
- Lock and unlock campus facilities as requested; grant access as required.
- Complete and submit incident reports to the Director of Security.
- Identify and report discrepancies in lighting, HVAC systems, locks, and other safety or maintenance issues.
- Serve as the campus liaison to local law enforcement and fire/rescue services.
- Deter illegal activity on campus through visibility and engagement.
- Respond promptly to all campus emergencies.
- Respond immediately to any active violent intruder or similar life-threatening situations.
- Assist in training staff and students in emergency response drills.
- Conduct routine inspections of fire safety and life-saving equipment; report any deficiencies.
- Assist with the removal or escort of individuals from campus property, as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned or deemed necessary.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:
- High school diploma/GED.
- One year of experience in security or public safety.
- Must possess a valid New Mexico driver's license.
- Must possess a current valid New Mexico Security Guard Level III License/Certification issued by the Private Investigations Board of the New Mexico Regulations and Licensing Department; or be able to obtain a New Mexico Security Guard Level III License/Certification within 6 months of hire date (at the expense of the employer).
- Must attend annual training(s) as required to maintain New Mexico Level III Security Guard License/Certification.
Preferred:
- Supervisory or lead experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must have the ability to safely operate and utilize various equipment, including but not limited to motor vehicles, handcuffs, expandable batons, pepper spray, radios, department-issued firearms, and computers.
- Must be able to quickly and objectively analyze situations to determine appropriate emergency actions.
- Must be able to identify potential hazards and take preventive or corrective actions, up to and including the use of physical or deadly force.
- Must demonstrate and maintain proficiency in the use of various tools and techniques, including verbal and physical de-escalation skills, handcuffing, pepper spray, expandable batons, and firearms.

- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
- The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
- The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear.
- The employee is frequently required to use hands to handle or feel objects.
- The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and run.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
