HJF is seeking a Scientist II to develop and conduct research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

This position will be in support of the Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i). The Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i), funded by the Department of Defense was established in 2013. SC2i is a Uniformed Services University center that leverages legacy information from service members, and critically ill civilian and military patients to develop biomarker-driven clinical decision support tools (CDSTs) with the goal of improving patient clinical outcomes and reducing costs across the injury/disease cycle. The role involves both laboratory and administrative responsibilities, with an expected balance of approximately 50% bench work and 50% administrative duties.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.



  • Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards and / or is compliant with GCLP, GMP, CAP, and CLIA / CLIP regulatory guidelines.
  • Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
  • Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
  • Ability to learn about, onboard, and train laboratory personnel on new technologies and methodologies.
  • Critically evaluates, analyzes and interprets data and presents in a clear, well-organized, scientifically sound reports and protocols. Disseminate and present scientific data and research efforts through formal reports, attendance at national and international scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Perform complex, non-standard, GCLP (GCP, GLP) tests and experiments in biomedical and translational sciences. This may include multiplex immunoassays (Luminex/MSD/ELISA), and Molecular Biology techniques (DNA/RNA isolation and analysis, qRT-PCR, RNAseq), Cell Biology techniques (cell sorting/fractionation, cell activation and proliferation, cell culture), and/or Immunology techniques (cell straining, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry).
  • Provides strategic and operation direction ensuring studies are conducted in line with appropriate SOPs, GMP, GCLP, CAP, CLIA / CLIP standards and other guidelines.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.



Education and Experience



  • Doctoral Degree in Biological science or related field.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Strong experience/expertise in multianalytic proteomic profiling, qRT-PCR, ELISA, nucleic acid isolation and quantification, gene expression microarrays, flow cytometry, cell surface marker staining, cell culture and other basic cellular and molecular biology techniques.
  • Proven skills in immunoassay, biochemical and molecular assay design and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust Clearance.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 40 lbs
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary/hourly pay range for this position is $88,600-$115,000. Actual salary/hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
