About the Role

Scientific American seeks a full-time combination copy editor and fact-checker to work with our digital editorial team, which reports to the Copy Director. The ideal candidate will have an ability to ensure quality and accuracy under tight deadlines in a high-pressure daily news environment, a sharp eye for detail, a proficiency in grammar and strong research skills, as well as enthusiasm for Scientific American's style and core mission.

As part of our online copy team, the copy editor/fact-checker will work alongside a senior copy editor/fact-checker and an associate copy editor/fact-checker, along with editors, writers and multimedia staff, to produce our award-winning analysis and commentary on science discoveries, science policy, public health, mathematics, social science, technology, and insights and innovations that matter. This role will call for copyediting and fact-checking multiple stories a day, including breaking news content.

This role is based in our New York or Washington, D.C. offices on a hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Copyedit and fact-check multiple online articles per day. Daily assignments will consist predominantly of news stories (including urgent breaking articles, deeper analyses and evergreen content) and, frequently, associated infographics. They may also include columns, opinion pieces, social media posts, podcast and video scripts and produced videos
  • Ensure clean copy that adheres to rules of grammar and mechanics, Scientific American style and clarity
  • Ensure accuracy that adheres to Scientific American's standards by searching for and checking against solid sources, as well as any provided by the editor, including scholarly papers
  • Ensure that deadlines are met, including very tight needed turnarounds for breaking news
  • Adhere to Scientific American's style usage, fact-checking, and sensitivity guidelines and to guidance from our legal team
  • Communicate clearly with the online copy's team senior copy editor and with editors to ensure content is handled efficiently and meets our standards

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • Experience copyediting and fact-checking online news in a CMS
  • Experience performing online research, especially via scholarly publications
  • Experience working for a publication with a distinct style and style guidelines
  • Understanding of news story structure, narrative and sentence mechanics
  • Ability to pose succinct queries to editors and writers about technical content
  • Ability to communicate quickly on a variety of digital platforms, as well as in person
  • Good judgment and an ability to work collegially

Desirable

  • Two to three years of publishing experience
  • Experience in science or technology journalism
  • Background and proficiency in mathematics
  • A knowledge of and enthusiasm for all kinds of science
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field, English, or Journalism
  • Analytic and research skills to gather and determine accuracy of information from a variety of sources

US Annualized Base Salary: $64,350 - $70,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
