About the Role

Scientific American is looking for a Breaking News Director to oversee its breaking news coverage and make our web site a must-read destination for everything happening right now in the world of science. The director will be the traffic cop of our newsroom, coordinating coverage across multiple desks and departments. The role will make sure that every news item is either covered by a beat reporter or assigned to their own breaking news team, and that we have every story published within an hour of it breaking.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in science or tech reporting, and must have experience identifying, assigning and editing live news. They are focused on speed and accuracy, and not afraid to turn around a large quantity of copy every day. They know where to look to find what's new and trending before anyone else has the story.

This director will lead a small team that is tasked with writing short and accurate news stories on extremely tight deadlines. It's an ideal position for an experienced journalist who wants to be a mentor and a teacher to early career reporters.

This role is based in our New York office on a hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities:

• Finding vital breaking news and trending stories, and working with reporters to produce stories quickly
• Assigning and editing engaging, accurate and swiftly delivered news in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
• Coordinating across teams to determine who is covering what story so that we don't miss anything
• Monitoring competing news sites, wires, and social media for the stories that matter to our readers
• Ensuring that all content is optimized for SEO and social media
• Managing a team of rookie reporters, helping them develop future beats, and teaching them to become world-class journalists

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

• A minimum of 7 years of experience covering or editing news at a real-time news outlet
• Proven track record of filing or editing news in a fast-paced environment
• Experience as a reporter or editor covering science and/or technology stories
• Ability to work a flexible schedule if there's a big breaking story out of normal work hours
• Strong news judgment and the ability to identify relevant stories and trends
• A high level of motivation, organization and outstanding communication skills

Desirable

• An undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field, or a master's in journalism
• Experience using data and SEO to inform decision-making
• A knowledge of and enthusiasm for all kinds of science

US Annualized Base Salary: $135,000 - $150,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
