The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking an attorney to join our corporate legal team. This person will be part of our corporate management group, reporting to the general counsel. They will support the company and our engineering and scientific pursuits by providing legal advice that is consistent with our mission, vision, values, business strategies, and regulatory requirements. Consultation and advice may include matters related to professional practice and liability, contracts, policies, licensure, company registration, professional liability, employment, real estate, regulatory requirements, intellectual property, enterprise risk management, and partnering and acquisition activities.

A successful person in this role will be a skilled and experienced attorney with a flexible working style, able to influence without authority and advise senior leaders on a variety of complex topics related to our service delivery and corporate operations.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Project delivery support: Prepare, review, interpret, and revise project contract documents, offering advice about proposed terms, negotiation strategies, and alternative risk management approaches. Help the team resolve issues with potential legal consequence and, when needed, collaborate with the COO, insurer representatives, and outside counsel to respond to and defend claims. Serve as a resource to our Project Management Resource Group (PMRG) to develop and refine templates, gather and share lessons learned, and contribute to continuous improvement of our risk management practices and resources.

  • Business and professional practice support: Draft, review, and analyze materials related to acquisitions, entities, corporate registrations, employment, real estate, intellectual property, and legal filings, as well as regulatory compliance topics. Advise on legal topics related to general business operations and act as a strategic business partner to provide thought leadership to assess and mitigate risks in a manner consistent with the company's mission, vision, and values.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: Anticipated base salary range of $145,000-170,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Hybrid: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis and Duluth Minnesota offices.
  • Travel expectation: Travel is expected to be minimal, with occasional travel to other Barr offices or for legal matters in jurisdictions where we operate (less than 10%).
  • Physical requirements for the role may include: Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: JD from an accredited law school.

  • Experience: At least 8 years of relevant experience:

    • Successful experience with counseling senior management and business leaders.
    • Strong strategic and analytical thinking skills, both for long-term focus and managing immediate business needs.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to clearly articulate issues and develop tractable plans to address complex, multi-dimensional problems.
    • Excellent negotiation skills.
    • Comfort managing multiple jurisdictions for offices across the United States and Canada.
  • Licenses/certifications: State bar admission, active license to practice law in Minnesota.

  • Software: Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Driver's license: Possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Experience serving as counsel in engineering and environmental services contracting, claims, and risk management.

  • Active license to practice in other states.

  • Awareness of the legal landscape in Canada.

  • Experience with employment law matters.
