Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Comparative Medicine provides housing and care for vertebrate animals used in research and teaching at the Brody School of Medicine and ECU. This includes provision of appropriate housing, husbandry, and behavioral management, preventive medicine and clinical care, technical and surgical research support, and ensuring compliance with multiple federal regulators and accreditation bodies. Facilities encompass over 70,000 square feet, and species include fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals.
Job Duties
This position will assist husbandry and veterinary leadership by providing new employee training and employee retraining on proper SOP procedures, as well as maintaining all training records and leading the AALAS training program for animal care staff to work towards various levels of AALAS certification. Trains and retrains employees for specific job applications in their areas and for occupational and health hazards unique to their positions. May also interface with and provide husbandry or technical training for students, staff, and/or faculty. May be assigned other duties as determined by management.

Provides care of multiple animal species on an as needed basis in a research and teaching environment, including routine husbandry duties and associated record-keeping; providing medical care under the direction of the veterinary staff; and participating in projects involving special husbandry and research needs.

Works to ensure federal regulations, accreditation standards, and institutional guidelines are met.
Shares on-call emergency rotation and serves a backup for the DCM Research Operations Manager and Animal Care Coordinator in their absence as needed.

  • Provide training and re-training to new staff members as requested by Animal Care Coordinator, facility manager, or veterinarian. Training can include but is not limited to operations and procedures in cage wash areas, routine husbandry practices, animal handling techniques, medication delivery, room and facility sanitation methods, and all types of related record-keeping.
  • Provides training in occupational and health hazards that animal care and cagewash technicians may be exposed to in the course of their jobs. Position is responsible for new employee training, employee retraining, and maintenance of training records consistent with federal regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Trainer provides AALAS training classes for all staff preparing for AALAS certification exam. Works with management to develop SOPs for all animal care duties, revising as appropriate, and ensures that animal care staff are trained on the SOPs.

  • Provide food, water, bedding, and enrichment for multiple species housed in 6 animal facilities on the ECU campus. Ensure that special diets are prepared and fed as directed. Receive, inspect, and prepare identification and caging for animals. Identify animals as needed using approved methods such as ear tags, tattoos, etc.
  • Place animals in proper housing rooms in barrier, biosecure, conventional, and biocontainment areas. Understand and ensure that proper personal protective equipment is worn specific to these areas when placing and working with animals. Select pairs of rodents for routine breeding activities and make recommendations on breeding pairs for more complex breeding activities.
  • Record all required husbandry, behavior, research, and physical plant data and maintain all necessary records as required by federal law and accreditation standards. Prepare acid water or medicated water as directed, carefully measuring the quantity of material to be added. Evaluate ventilation, room temperature, plumbing, and light timer systems for proper operation. Report problems to Facility Manager or Animal Care Coordinator.
  • Evaluate condition of caging, automatic watering devices, and other equipment. Make minor repairs and report other deficiencies to Facility Manager or Animal Care Coordinator. Clean and disinfect animal rooms. Perform daily health checks on all animals under position's care and report any signs of health problems to veterinary staff. Assist veterinary technicians, research technicians, investigators and veterinarians with handling, restraint, and treatments including injections and sample collections.
  • Carry out medical treatments as directed by veterinary staff including provision of medications, special food, etc. Euthanize animals as directed using AVMA and IACUC approved techniques. Weekend and holiday care on a rotating basis as needed. Drive state vehicles to facilities on both campuses to deliver animals and supplies, and other duties as required.

  • Additional duties include maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, and ensuring that adequate feed, bedding, and support supplies are always available. The position will assist Operations Manager and Animal Care Coordinator in troubleshooting and maintaining facility equipment such as mechanical cage and rack washers, bedding dispensers, bottle fillers, and autoclaves, and assists as needed with facilities personnel on maintaining HVAC, lighting, plumbing, and other building infrastructure. Ensures animal care support equipment remains functional.
  • Works closely with facilities personnel to maintain appropriate physical plant and operational standards consistent with oversight bodies, including CDC requirements. This position assists the Research Operations Manager in maintenance, animal holding areas, and any other duties assigned by management.
  • The Trainer works regularly with facilities staff; research faculty, staff, and students; veterinary care and technical staff; and other ECU personnel. On-call duties are required for building maintenance and animal support activities.

High school and one year of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
