Job Description

Position Title: Evening Shift Custodial Supervisor

Location: Environmental Protection Agency - National Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Laboratory (NVFEL), Ann Arbor, MI


Summary

This position provides custodial support services at the Environmental Protection Agency's NVFEL facility. Services cover administrative offices, industrial laboratories, common areas, and warehouse spaces. The Custodial Supervisor is responsible for managing custodial staff, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sustainability. The shift for this position is 3pm to 11pm, Monday through Friday.


Supervisory Roles and Responsibilities

  • Report to the on-site Contract Maintenance Manager (CMM).
  • Prepare and deliver status reports; attend meetings as required.
  • Manage a custodial staff of 4-6 employees.
  • Maintain custodial equipment and request repairs to CMM.
  • Plan and coordinate custodial schedules with CMM and EPA to avoid interference with building operations.
  • Organize and oversee special custodial project work.
  • Notify the Project Manager (PM) of any changes to custodial schedules.
  • Ensure all cleaning materials undergo required health, safety, and sustainability reviews before use.
  • Support vendor selection for cleaning materials and supplies; ensure products meet Government approval and environmental standards.
  • Coordinate scheduling of custodial services during off-hours (nights, weekends, holidays) and arrange coverage for absences.
  • Maintain accountability for cleaning supplies, equipment, safety data sheets, PPE, and compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Ensure custodial practices comply with OSHA VPP, recycling, and environmental waste disposal requirements.
  • Serve as recycling monitor and coordinate turn-in of recyclable materials.
  • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring additional custodial personnel when needed.
  • Directly supervise employees within the department(s).
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Custodial Roles and Responsibilities



  • Perform custodial duties as outlined in the Performance Work statement for the Site, in addition to the Appendix D Attachment 1: Janitorial Performance Work Statement (PWS) for EPA NVFEL.
  • Supervise or complete daily cleaning and restocking of restrooms, locker rooms, shower facilities, and break areas, including replenishing soap, paper towels, and sanitary receptacles; disinfecting sinks, toilets, urinals, and showers; sweeping and mopping restroom and locker room floors; wiping down partitions, mirrors, and fixtures; and cleaning lunchrooms, vending areas, refrigerators, microwaves, drinking fountains, and ice makers.
  • Oversee custodial services in laboratory spaces, including offices, lobbies, corridors, conference rooms, control and instrumentation rooms, soak areas, and test cells. Ensure proper cleaning in specialized technical areas such as Machine Shop Rooms 319 and 321 (removal of oils, fluids, and metal shavings) and Dynamometer Test Cells (serviced after hours to prevent disruption). Coordinate cleaning of laboratory exterior windows, loading docks, and bottle closets as scheduled.
  • Properly label all containers of cleaning chemicals with manufacturer details and hazard information.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment and trash receptacles in sanitary condition.
  • Store materials and equipment safely; keep work areas free of tripping hazards.
  • Sort, package, and classify trash according to EPA standards at the point of origin.
  • Manage custodial supply inventory and submit order requests to the CMM.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a custodial lead or custodial worker (industrial, laboratory, or warehouse experience preferred).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and environmental requirements related to custodial services.
  • Working knowledge of custodial equipment and machinery.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach frequently.
  • Must obtain and maintain an EPA facility clearance and pass background checks.
  • Must successfully pass initial and random drug screenings.
