We are seeking a technically skilled and detail-oriented Senior Imaging Technician to serve as the technical authority for all imaging and digitization activities supporting a high-profile federal archival records project. This is a hands-on, hybrid position responsible for the direct execution of digitization workflows, quality control, and technical oversight, as outlined in the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Performance Work Statement (PWS). The Lead Imaging Specialist will ensure all images meet or exceed FADGI, federal, and DHA standards and will be accountable for technical problem solving, workflow improvement, and compliance with archival handling protocols.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in setup, calibration, and daily operation of high-resolution imaging equipment, facilitating government approval of all technical tools and protocols.
  • Lead the hands-on digitization of 35mm photographic slides, X-ray films, and related archival materials using preservation-grade standards and FADGI-compliant processes.
  • Assess each batch of collection material for handling risks, recommend and apply specific conservation measures when needed, and implement compliant workflows for fragile or deteriorated records.
  • Directly supervise and train imaging staff on best practices for digitization, safe handling, workflow documentation, and problem resolution.
  • Take primary responsibility for quality control, performing file checks to verify completeness, accuracy, orientation, image fidelity, correct metadata association, and compliance with contract specifications.
  • Ensure every digital file undergoes independent review for defects, accurate filename conventions, and proper metadata capture, and that all technical remediation is completed promptly and thoroughly.
  • Document imaging and QC outcomes and contribute to incident reports and status reporting as required by the PWS.
  • Coordinate workflow improvement with the Project Manager, proactively identify efficiency or quality issues, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain a secure, organized, and compliant work environment consistent with federal information assurance and physical archival standards.
  • Support all contract deliverables by preparing files, updating digitization process documentation, and collaborating closely with administrative, metadata, and IT support staff.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Imaging Science, Archival Science, Photography, Museum Studies, Library Science, or a related technical field, preferred. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 8 years of directly relevant professional experience in archival digitization, imaging, or digital preservation.
  • Minimum of 5years of professional imaging, digitization, or digital preservation experience (with degree). Without degree, minimum of 8 years of directly relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using professional imaging equipment (scanners and cameras), file processing and management software, and color management systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of FADGI, uncompressed TIFF standards, metadata protocols, and preservation-grade imaging best practices.
  • Practical experience handling, assessing, and digitizing fragile, sensitive, or deteriorating historical materials.
  • Proven ability to develop and enforce standard operating procedures, train staff, and document technical workflows.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in technical review and deliverables.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to support cross-functional teams and maintain compliance in a contract-oriented environment.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in federal, DoD, or major institutional digitization/archival projects.
