About The Role

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the launch team of Nature Sensors as an Associate or Senior Editor.

Launching in January, 2026, Nature Sensors will be a multidisciplinary journal at the intersection of applied sciences and engineering, showcasing advancements in sensor technologies, enabling methodologies, and their applications across diverse fields, including environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, wearable and implantable devices, and smart sensing systems for the Internet of Things.

Nature Sensors will connect researchers, industry experts, innovators, policymakers, and the public and publish thought pieces exploring the impact of the ubiquity of sensors, the datafication of society, and other broader challenges and issues in the field. The journal will emphasize real-world, societal applications of sensor technology, publishing original research, reviews, commentary, and opinion pieces across this broad domain. The journal aims to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration by uniting various scientific communities with the shared goal of developing and applying sensor technologies for societal benefit.

Role Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will play an important role in determining the representation of the fields they handle for the journal.
  • They will work closely within a small team of editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, management of the peer review process, commissioning and editing of reviews and comments, and writing for the journal.
  • They will have an interest in engaging with topical issues for the sensing community is essential.
  • They will have a broad scientific knowledge and training.
  • They will have excellent literary skills and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are a prerequisite.
  • They must be an enthusiastic communicator, have excellent interpersonal skills and be prepared to liaise with their community of researchers through conference attendance and lab visits, virtually and in person.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • The ideal candidate must have a PhD (or equivalent) and preferably postdoctoral experience and should be able to demonstrate a general interest in other areas of sensing research beyond their own. Editorial experience would be beneficial but is not required; candidates with substantial editorial experience will be considered for Senior Editor.
  • We welcome candidates with expertise in areas, including but not limited to: Quantum, optical, photonic, or acoustic sensors, wireless communication, telecommunications, and sensor networks, MEMS/NEMS.
  • Applicants do not need to cover all areas listed above but should bring strong expertise in at least one and a broad interest in sensing as a whole, since the Editor will be part of a small launch team covering the full scope of this dynamic field.
  • The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the journal's representation of their areas of expertise and will work closely within a small team on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, peer review management, commissioning and editing of reviews and commentary, and writing for the journal. Engagement with topical issues in the sensing community is essential.
  • Broad scientific knowledge, excellent writing skills, and a keen interest in science communication are prerequisites. The successful candidate must be an enthusiastic communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, able to liaise with researchers through conferences, lab visits, and other engagements, virtually and in person. Willingness to travel is essential.

The successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor and have an important role in setting the journal's agenda and shaping the scope of this new launch.The position is offered based on a hybrid working pattern and on a full-time basis and is based in the Shanghai, Beijing or New York offices of Springer Nature.

  • A 250-word Research Highlight in the style of Nature Electronics (see https://www.nature.com/natelectron/ on a peer-reviewed sensing research paper that has caught your attention recently. The paper you highlight should not be from your own (or previous) research group but should be on a topic that you find interesting. The Highlight should explain the importance and implications of the research to someone who is not a specialist in the subject.

The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor:$80,000 / Senior Editor: $95,000.
