Learn more at tandemdiabetes.com A DAY IN THE LIFE: The Principal IP and Product Paralegal serves as a senior paralegal resource providing advanced expertise in managing Tandem's patent, trademark, and domain name portfolios and acting as a key partner to the AGC, Product & IP as well as the IP Counsel and Product Counsel in implementing Tandem's overall IP and product compliance strategies. The Principal IP and Product Paralegal operates with significant independence, leads operational systems, builds scalable processes, and collaborates cross-functionally while ensuring data accuracy, compliance, and alignment with business objectives.
Principal IP and Product Paralegalat Tandem are also responsible for: Portfolio Management and Process Leadership
- Implements and optimizes IP docketing, matter management, and tracking systems.
- Independently oversees global patent, trademark, and domain name portfolios, ensuring data accuracy and timely prosecution, renewals, and enforcement.
- Leads development and execution of IP portfolio reports, dashboards, and analytics to inform strategic decision-making.
- Develops and maintains SOPs, workflows, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Leads invoice management, budgeting, and accrual processes in partnership with Legal Operations team and Finance.
- Prepares IP & Product Compliance education programs for business stakeholders.
Patent, Trademark, and Domain Name Administration
- Drives invention disclosure intake, triage, and evaluation processes.
- Prepares patent filing documents and coordinates global filings with outside counsel.
- Manages global annuity and maintenance fee payments.
- Organizes and prepares materials, agendas, and minutes for patent committee meetings.
- Oversees and maintain Tandem's virtual patent marking program.
- Prepares trademark documents and coordinate filings with outside counsel.
- Manages global trademark renewals and enforcement, including competitor watch services.
- Oversees acquisition, registration, renewal, and enforcement of global domain name portfolio.
Product Compliance Administration
- Reviews advertising and promotional materials for compliance with applicable laws and regulations and maintains claims substantiation files.
- Reviews labeling, IFUs, and packaging updates for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Reviews software product labeling for compliance with open-source licensing attribution notices requirements.
- Oversees ADA compliance of Tandem's website.
Legal Department Administration
- Researches, recommends, and assists with developing and improving processes, playbooks, knowledge management, andautomation across the Product & IP legal team.
- Ensures documentation is electronically stored in a uniform and specified format.
- Works within the legal matter management database, including creating profiles and summaries and managing existing matters, as needed.
- Works independently to ensure compliance with applicable legal and corporate policies.
- Performs legal research on an as needed basis and prepare memorandums as requested.
- Applies understanding of the business and how own area integrates with others to achieve departmental objectives.
- Ensures compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA, and other legal and regulatory requirements.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A/B.S.) in related field or combination of equivalent education and applicable work experience.
- Paralegal certificate, required.
- 15+ years of experience as a paralegal.
- A combination of law firm and in-house legal department experience, preferred.
- CA Notary Public certification, preferred.
- Demonstrated ability managing complex, global IP portfolios with timeliness, accuracy, and minimal attorney oversight.
- Advanced knowledge of U.S. and international IP procedures, with ability to work independently on complex matters.
- Deep proficiency with IP Matter Management systems, docketing tools, and analytics platforms.
- Strong understanding of the business and financial aspects of IP management, including budgeting and cost control.
- Ability to exercise discretion with confidential and sensitive information.
- Able to proactively identify issues and propose solutions to reduce risk for the company.
- Demonstrated success making good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, experience, and judgment.
- Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to a range of audiences in a clear and concise manner.
- Able to navigate change as well as assess and navigate risk, including ability to find paths forward despite ambiguities or competing priorities.
- Demonstrated skill and flexibility to function in a dynamic and innovative environment.
- Skilled project leader with demonstrated success in scoping tasks, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and anticipating project barriers.
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office and Adobe software.
WHEN & WHERE YOU'LL WORK: Hybrid: This role will be a mix of in-office work at our corporate headquarters in Del Mar, CA and remote work. This position is expected to be in office 2-3 days per week but may vary depending on business demands. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: The starting base pay range for this position is $125,000 - $150,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate's location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus and a robust benefits package.
