Work Location: Based in Columbia, Missouri however supports the entire health system. Occasional visits/work at outlying clinics and Jefferson City, Missouri.

Compensation:

* Base Pay Range: $4,388.80 - $6,931.60 per month, based on experience

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION:

Develop policies, processes, and procedures to establish the MUHC Safety Management System and Hazardous Materials and Waste Management System. Attain and maintain an in-depth knowledge of applicable federal, state and local codes, regulations and consensus standards related to Occupational and Environmental Safety. Review and interpret regulatory revisions, moratoriums, or equivalencies for applicability to MUHC and hospital specific policies and procedures, and compliance. Update affected internal policies, plans and practices based upon changes.

Provide safety advice and consultation to all levels of MUHC leadership, supervision, and staff. Assist leaders, directors and managers in the development and implementation of Occupational Safety and Physical Environment Safety programs within their respective areas or responsibility. Review, monitor, and where appropriate, elevate issues and concerns regarding resolution of incidents and injuries; assist in problem resolution when necessary. Monitor objectives and performance improvement indicators; develop strategies and recommendations to address lagging or failing indicators. Analyze work processes and work areas for safety. Make recommendations to reduce worker injuries.

Assist the Education and Training Department in development and implementation of an effective staff member training program to prevent worker injuries. Serve as technical advisor for MUHC Physical Environment Committee and subcommittees and represent the health system in other related university systems committees and with regulatory agencies. Performing recurring inspections, assessments and/or audits of processes, facilities, and grounds to identify safety issues, verify and validate performance, conformance and efficacy of the safety program Identify hazardous conditions and practices to help identify training & education that will assist in prevention of worker injuries.

Investigate incident reports in conjunction with the Risk Management to resolve potential safety issues and assess efficacy of policies and processes and report results to the appropriate hospital departments and administration. Report safety issues, non-compliance to codes, and accident trends to hospital departments and administration. Develop and monitor UMHC safety goals and ensure objectives are met in a timely manner. Report worker safety problems, non-compliance to training, and accident trends to hospital departments and administration.

Develop policies and processes consistent with an effective hazardous materials and waste management system. Coordinate the MUHC hazardous waste management program, including proper methods of storing and handling of hazardous materials with departments in conjunction with campus Environmental Health & Safety. Develop and monitor MUHC hazardous materials and wastes management system goals and ensure objectives are met in a timely manner.

Develop recommendations for hospital administration and department managers to correct safety issues. Investigating accidents and incidences involving MUHC employees to determine root cause(s) and to make recommendation to prevent future recurrences. Assist in development of the department budget. Collect data and prepare all reports of the Safety Management System and Hazardous Materials and Waste Management System for appropriate committee chair with recommendations for corrective actions. Perform related duties as assigned, which may include duties outside of field with oversight. Execute emergency responsibilities including on-call for weekends, holidays, and after hours as designated. May complete unit/department specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, or fire science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities can be acquired.

Three (3) years of safety experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Healthcare facility experience. Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees.
