Civil Service Position
Full Time pay range to $22 to $27 per hour
- 10 month position (Temporary - based upon available funding)

Under the direction of the music department head, accompanist duties include (but are not limited to) preparation, rehearsal and performance for the following areas in the UMD Department of Music:

  • Opera Studio Student Recitals
  • Student End of Semester Juries
  • Student Recital Hour Performances
  • Prospective Student Auditions
  • Voice Studio Class
  • Vocal Ensembles
  • Honors Events
  • UMD Music Department Guest Artists
  • Annual Matinee Musicale Concert
  • Faculty Search Candidates
  • Faculty Recitals
  • Other

Duties also include but are not limited to assisting in selection of appropriate music as required; assist instructors by serving as a coach for vocal and instrumental students, scheduling of accompanists for student recitals, auditions and juries. Other duties may be assigned in connection with departmental accompanying needs. This position will involve some evening and weekend work to be arranged according to the guidelines established by the Civil Service contract guidelines within a 40 hour/week schedule.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 2 years of performance, directing, arranging, accompanying, vocal coaching and/or entertainment experience
  • Excellent piano/accompanying and coaching skills
  • Ability to play a broad range of musical styles including jazz, classical, pop and musical theatre
  • Ability to read open scores, lift music off recordings, play chord changes and appropriately stylize and improvise related piano parts
  • Strong communication skills - written, verbal, interpersonal
  • Capable of handling multiple/varied tasks while meeting deadlines
  • Must be available for weekend and evening engagements and able to travel if needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience accompanying collegiate and professional ensembles.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22 - $27 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.) Full Time - 10 month position (Temporary - based upon available funding)
