JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS The School of Engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College is seeking qualified applicants for a Part-Time Manufacturing Research and Workforce Development Assistant. The successful candidate will support metals manufacturing initiatives including, but not limited to, workforce development, industry engagement, research, and curriculum development. The Manufacturing Research and Workforce Development Assistant will have the opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scholars across the Penn State University system including PSU personnel, students, and industry professionals. Additionally, the Manufacturing Research and Workforce Development Assistant will be expected to collaborate and interact with local manufacturing leaders, coordinate and aid in the instruction of manufacturing workforce development trainings, work with external sales persons and coordinate manufacturing lab equipment installations/ trainings, and promote metals manufacturing initiatives at Penn State Behrend. Key responsibilities:
- Provides technical, teaching (instruction), and administrative support for manufacturing workforce development initiatives and programs.
- Assists in the development of manufacturing education curriculum with emphasis on casting, welding, forging, machining, metallurgy, and additive manufacturing.
- Work closely with metals manufacturing faculty to provide technical support on research projects with special emphasis on manufacturing processes, material characterization, data collection, data analysis, and technical writing.
- Collaborate with local manufacturing industry leaders to plan and carry out manufacturing workforce development trainings on campus and at local manufacturing locations.
- Cultivates relationships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors.
- Works closely with industry partners, vendors, and the facilities department to develop and advance Behrend's manufacturing and materials characterization laboratories.
Required qualifications:
- 10+ years of manufacturing industry experience in casting, forging, automation, additive manufacturing, and/or machining.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
- Strong track record of technical leadership, program development, and manufacturing equipment acquisition, training, and operation.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts both verbally and written.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment where meeting project schedules and deliverables is required.
Preferred qualifications:
- 20+ years of work experience in the metals manufacturing industry.
- Proven experience writing technical proposals resulting in project funding.
- Experience working in or collaborating with universities, industry, and national laboratories.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
- Teaching (instruction) experience at the University level.
Work conditions:
- Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.
- Ability to work hands-on in engineering and manufacturing laboratory environments and in manufacturing workforce development trainings.
- Ability to work in both a standard office and a metals manufacturing laboratory environment.
Hourly Pay range: $20 - $30 Per Hour BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
