GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the supervision of Communications management, the Intern will work with the department on a number communications, marketing, promotional and publicity projects. This position is performed under close supervision - work is checked frequently through observation and results achieved.

Note: This is an unpaid internship.


Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist in writing and proof-reading press releases, public service announcements, resolutions, proclamations, articles and correspondence related to department programs.

Learn and understand Associated Press standards that will be applied to all writing assignments.

Assist with creation and implementation of marketing, promotional and publicity campaigns for city events, programs and projects.

Assist with event preparations and planning.

Assist the Assistant Communications Director with initiatives related to the city's Public Art Advisory Board.

Assist Events & Marketing Coordinator with content (photography, videography, text generation, etc.) for the city's social media accounts.
Work with Senior Advisor of Arts & Culture to implement marketing strategies for 20 arts & culture non-profit organizations within city limits (Arts & Culture Alliance - wpinspires.org).

Work with Creative Services Manager and Content & Graphics Coordinator for projects that involve graphic design and website presence.

Conduct basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service.

Perform other work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of basic communications and/or marketing principles.

Skill in various computer software programs, such as Microsoft Office and Internet applications including social media (Facebook, X, Instagram, etc).

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Photography, videography, and video editing skills are not required, but desired.

Motivated self-starter able to work independently.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Flexibility and desire to work on varying communications projects.

Ability to manage time and schedules to meet deadlines.

Ability to communicate effectively with all staff, vendors, and the public.

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.


Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student by an accredited college, university, or technical school in fields such as Communications, Marketing, Journalism or other closely related field.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies required for the position may be considered

CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: All certifications must be current at the time of application, and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical

This is light work requiring the exertion of 0 - 20 pounds of force occasionally and 0 - 10 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition objects.

Ability to traverse about a variety of city jobsites/facilities with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to remain stationary at a keyboard for extended periods of time and constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer.

Ability to manipulate objects and demonstrate small, precise movements repetitively.

Environmental

Tasks are regularly performed in an office setting without frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Sensory

Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one's surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
