Primary Purpose of the Organization:
The overall mission of the Department of Psychology is to provide students with competitive and comprehensive instruction to prepare for a range of post-baccalaureate educational and career opportunities. We serve a culturally, racially, and economically diverse population of civilian and military learners from southeastern North Carolina, around the nation, and across the globe. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in psychology with options for concentrations in health psychology and work and organizational psychology through campus-based and online programs, and an online graduate program that includes Master of Arts degree in general psychology, and graduate certificates in behavioral research and professional psychology.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Department of Psychology invites applicants for a one year (2026 -2027) fixed-term position as an Adjunct Assistant Professor/Lecturer of Psychology starting in August 2026. The successful applicant will have a A successful applicant with a Ph.D. degree may also be approved to teach in the graduate psychology program. The position also involves a ten percent (10%) time commitment to university service.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • A teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester and may include both face-to-face and online classes in the undergraduate program and online classes in the graduate program.
  • Maintaining office hours for purposes of student consultation and meeting with students as requested/needed, and completion of assigned duties.
  • Mentoring students for professional development, research, and academic success
  • Participation in service activities (usually through committee work) designed to advance the mission and quality of the University, College, and Department programs. Assignments to routine committee work will be made in consideration of other demands placed on the faculty member by the University.
  • Attendance of Department, College, and University meetings, and other events as required by the university.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Adjunct Assistant Professor - Ph.D. in Psychology and Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the university level.
  • Lecturer - Master's degree in Psychology with at least 18 Credit hours of graduate psychology courses and demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the university level.

Knowledge skills and abilities:
The candidate must have a strong commitment to undergraduate/graduate education, evidence of teaching ability, evidence of scholarly endeavors, and a record of professional and community involvement/service. The Department is interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching and service.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of promoting student success.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses in introduction to general psychology, careers in psychology, research methods, statistics, and/or senior seminar.
  • Experience teaching courses of variable modalities and class sizes, including large class sizes.
  • Demonstrated excellence in course design and delivery.
  • Evidence of effective mentorship of university level students.
