At Milwaukee Regional Medical Center Thermal, our Relief Lead Operators carry real responsibility for keeping steam and chilled water flowing to a campus where reliability supports patient care every day. This role is suited for professionals with experience in complex power generation or energy systems, such as boiler operations, turbine systems, or even nuclear backgrounds, who are ready to apply their knowledge in a clean, high-performing environment. Minimum requirements to be successful in this role:

  • NASOE (National Association of Stationary Operating Engineers) High Pressure Steam Engineer First Class, or ASOPE (American Society of Power Engineers) Power Plant Operating Engineer - First Class license, or City of Milwaukee First Class License, (or equivalent experience).
  • Substantial experience in the operation and repair of gas and oilfired boilers, steam turbines, electric drives, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct others and to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Physically able to climb over and around equipment, to lift materials up to 50 pounds, and to work with standard tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to work with standard tools and equipment.
  • Capable of working rotating shifts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. On a relief basis and as directed by the Lead Engineer or Production Manager, directs and instructs all other on-shift personnel in any way that will assist him/her in fulfilling responsibility of safely, reliably, and efficiently operating the plant in compliance with all laws and regulations, company policies and procedures and other directives, and in conformance with all customer contracts which govern the operation of the facility.
  1. Perform the duties of a Lead Engineer or Shift Engineer when assigned to that position.
  1. Responsible for operation of chiller and boiler systems.
  1. Coordinates and communicates with construction, maintenance, project, and distribution system personnel as necessary for system and plant evolutions and work.
  1. Maintains oversight of water treatment activities.
  1. Perform housekeeping as specified in the facility Housekeeping Plan or assigned by Lead Engineer.
  1. Perform lubrication where required and on schedule specified by the Facility Lubrication Program.
  1. Perform maintenance and repair of any and all equipment and facilities as directed and perform minor maintenance walkthroughs for the purpose of repairing minor maintenance items. Document items found but not repaired on a Work Order.
  1. Executes an assigned collateral duty associated with one of the subordinate processes affiliated with plant operation such as operating procedure development, chemical management, safety system management, or others.
  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to communicate verbally, have far visual acuity of 20 feet or more; fine manipulation for picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm as in gross manipulation; the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds; near vision acuity with clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less; and peripheral vision of observing an area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point.

The employee is frequently required to climb ramps/stairs; climb ladders/ropes/scaffolding; crawling; crouching; gross manipulation of seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand; foot/leg control to use of one or both feet or legs to move controls on machinery or equipment; keyboarding: kneeling, lifting and carrying a max of 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching at/below shoulder level; reaching overhead, sitting, sanding/walking; and stooping.

The employee is occasionally required to go into a confined space with limited entry or exit.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position involves working in a steam, hot water, and/or chilled water plant and/or its distribution system. While performing job duties, employees may occasionally encounter potential hazards, including fumes, airborne particles, high-pressure steam in piping or equipment, both hot and cold temperatures, and hazards associated with moving machinery. The work environment's noise level typically ranges from moderate to loud. Other potential hazards common to heating and cooling plants may include confined spaces, slippery surfaces, rotating equipment, chemical handling (e.g., water treatment chemicals), and burns. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided and physical controls are in place as needed to mitigate these risks.

Pay Transparency Statement:

The compensation philosophy reflects the Company's reasonable expectation at the time of the posting. We consider a number of factors when making individual compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience and training, and other business needs.

The hourly range for this position is $42.00 to $50.00.

This range reflects the base salary for this position.
