Under general direction, responsible for providing leadership to medical physicists at satellite locations of Smilow Cancer Hospital. Responsible for the daily oversight and management of the medical physicists at satellite locations. Collaborates with Smilow Chief Physicist and other Regional Chief Physicist to develop and maintain policies and procedures for all sites ensuring the efficient and consistent delivery of excellent patient care across all the Smilow network. Provides radiation oncologists with medical physics and dosimetry services including all the physical data required for the delivery of radiation treatments. Develops methods and devices that facilitate the accomplishment of treatment prescriptions. Provides medical dosimetrists with the physical data required for treatment planning. Coordinates with the Radiological Engineering and IT staff members for machine repair/maintenance in the radiation oncology departments.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Administrative and Operational Duties and Responsibilities
    • 1.1 Serves as the subject matter expert for all clinical and technical aspects of the medical physicist role for the assigned regional sites.
  • 2. Equipment calibration and maintenance.
    • 2.1 Performs calibrations on all radiation therapy equipment on a routine basis and prepares calibration reports that include all of the data necessary for the safe and accurate application of the equipment to radiation therapy. Treatment equipment includes linear accelerators and the associated imaging devices, orthovoltage x-ray units, CT simulators, gamma knife, high-dose-rate afterloading units, and a host of radioactive sources.
  • 3. Radiation dosimetry and characterization
    • 3.1 Performs radiation dosimetry characterization of new radiation treatment equipments and techniques.
  • 4. Treatment planning and evaluation
    • 4.1 Manages treatment-planning computer systems which include maintaining and updating data base, development of new software, and implementing and overseeing quality assurance programs.
  • 5. Special treatment procedure and medical physics consult
    • 5.1 Designs and assists the construction of specialized devices and instruments for new clinical techniques and evaluate such equipment to assure proper operation
  • 6. Facility design and radiation protection.
    • 6.1 Calculates room shielding requirements based on regulations
  • 7. Quality assurance
    • 7.1 Develops and assists the implementation of quality assurance programs, and tests these programs for conformance with specifications established by the JCAHO, NRC and other regulatory agencies.
  • 8. Teaching and professional development
    • 8.1 Presents lectures and laboratory demonstrations to resident physicians, medical radiation dosimetry students, and radiation therapy students on physics of radiation therapy
  • 9. Performs other job-related duties as required.
  • 10. The above-listed duties and responsibilities apply to all radiation oncology sites at Smilow Cancer Hospital and clinics that have contractual agreement(s) with Yale New Haven Hospital.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Master's degree in physics, medical physics or a closely related discipline.

EXPERIENCE

Eight (8) years of experience in a clinical environment performing Radiation Therapy Physics, including three (3) years in a supervisory or leadership capacity at a satellite site.

LICENSURE

Certification in therapeutic radiological physics by the American Board of Radiology or equivalent board is required.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Ability to manage professional staff in radiation oncology physics; competent in theory and practice of radiation dosimetry; demonstrable knowledge of fundamental physics, advanced mathematics, advanced atomic and nuclear physics, basic anatomy, computer operation, and network basics; strong analytic skills in analyzing and solving problems encountered in the design and execution of radiation therapy; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and familiar with current radiation safety standards
