We manage the state park system and programs to inventory, interpret and protect Tennessee's rich natural, historical, and archaeological heritage. About the Division of Solid Waste Management: The Division of Solid Waste Management is responsible for protecting the health and environmental quality for all Tennesseans through responsive and effective oversight of waste management activities. The activities are land-based, regulating both solid waste and hazardous waste through specialized programs and functions. These include landfill permits, hazardous waste permits, state remediation program, used oil management, lead-based paint abatement, special waste, universal waste, and annual waste reporting. We also provide technical and financial assistance in the recovery and management of materials for reuse and recycling supporting end users and manufacturers.

Job Overview:

This executive service position works with the Hazardous Waste Permitting Section from our Central Office in Nashville and offers the opportunity to work with diverse stakeholders across multiple State/Federal agencies and internal and external customers. This position serves as the Hazardous Waste Program Trainer in the Division of Solid Waste Management.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Implement process improvements by working with Field Office Hazardous Waste Inspectors to ensure quality and consistency across the state for hazardous waste inspections.
  2. Train Field Office Hazardous Waste Inspectors in order to support the DSWM goal that all Hazardous Waste Inspection reports, letters, and communications are professional and consistent across the state.
  3. Collaborate with Hazardous Waste Leadership to identify additional training opportunities to promote the professional growth of Hazardous Waste Inspectors across the state.
  4. Conduct inspections with new hazardous waste inspectors to enhance the education and workforce development across the state.
  5. Identify opportunities to interact with the regulated community on hazardous waste regulations.
  6. Identify opportunities to improve the inspection process at Hazardous Waste permitted facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications (MQs) include a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, biology, engineering, physical or life sciences, or other acceptable science and seven (7) years of full-time professional environmental program work. The successful candidate will possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel daily, including overnight, and will have competent knowledge using Microsoft Office 365 products, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
