Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate performs and may supervise the performance of laboratory experimental procedures in support of academically supervised research and teaching; and perform related duties as required.

The incumbent performs or makes technical determinations or observations in the field(s) of scientific endeavor to yield technical data about the phenomena under investigation.

The incumbent works under academic supervision. They will participate or assist in teaching activities by discussing and demonstrating procedures, working with other lab personnel and providing technical assistance to students and visiting scholars.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in the field of neuroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, or genetics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience, including relevant laboratory techniques as typically acquired by a Bachelor's degree in the field of neuroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, or genetics or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in the fields of neuroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunohistochemistry, tissues culture and animal research.
  • Proven experience to independently participate in the execution of research projects. Expert knowledge sufficient to coordinate studies within our lab, other labs, other departments and universities. Skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and highly productive manner.
  • Demonstrated experience performing advanced techniques in preparations of experiments. This includes techniques with various types of fluorescent microscopy, molecular biology, biochemistry and primary cell culture. Ability to troubleshoot techniques independently and in preparation of the next step.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment with a diverse population. Able to discuss and understand day-to-day laboratory issues, lab research including experimental plans, results and ideas with the PI, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and other lab personnel. Ability to read, comprehend and present research materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to be well organized in execution of complex experiments, paying close attention to detail and being accurate.
  • Proven experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage, accounting for and disposal or research materials.
  • Knowledge of EH&S procedures for laboratory safety and experience employing these guidelines in a laboratory setting.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PhotoShop, email system and a variety of web-based programs (GenBank, BLAST).
  • Ability to provide quick and flexible leadership around shifts in project needs that occur based on the ground realities.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and work effectively with constituents to facilitate the mission of the laboratory.
  • Willingness to learn new theory, techniques and tasks and share knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD degree in the field of neuroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, or genetics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience working in a neurosciences lab.
  • Previous experience in extracellular vesicle biology.

Department Overview

The UC Davis Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy conducts world-class research in areas such as vision science, developmental biology, stem cell biology, neurobiology, and cancer biology to advance the understanding of biological mechanisms and human diseases. The department's mission includes providing advanced education in the anatomical and biological sciences for undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, as well as fostering interdisciplinary research through state-of-the-art facilities for microscopy and tissue culture.

Department Specific Job Scope

Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Wendy M. Campana the incumbent will manage all aspects of the research laboratory and conduct independent research projects.

The position requires dual functions in scientific research and laboratory management. The research functions involve independent performance of a wide variety of specialized laboratory procedures in neurosciences, molecular, cellular and behavioral biology. Lab research is focused on cellular, molecular and behavioral responses to nerve injury and how that relates to chronic pain states.

The incumbent will work independently to make determinations and design experiments in basic cell biology lab techniques including sterile mammalian cell culture (primary cultures of sensory neurons and Schwann cells), flow cytometry, qPCR, immunoblot, Seahorse studies, immunofluorescence, live cell imaging, nanoparticle tracking analyses and immunohistochemistry. Proficiency utilizing microscopes and software to perform light and fluorescence microscopy, image acquisition (Cell Sens), image analysis (Imaris) and statistical analysis methods. The incumbent will also participate in animal studies including surgeries, injections, extracellular vesicle isolation, blood collection and assists in maintaining and overseeing mouse colonies.

Skills in data interpretation and study design based on current scientific literature and recent advances in the field are essential. The incumbent will make significant innovative contributions pertaining to design and overall direction of research projects, proposing possible changes in new directions when appropriate and trouble shooting. The incumbent will make significant contributions to innovative technologies and procedures in the lab. The position will read and extract relevant scientific articles, finding new sources of information for novel experimental design and execution. The incumbent will participate in the preparation of manuscripts and scientific articles suitable for publication in scientific journals, including preparing figures.

The lab oversight responsibilities include coordinating with EH&S to maintain a safe work environment. The position will oversee ledgers, income and expenditures and monitor lab safety issues. The position includes overseeing weekly ordering, inventory, equipment upkeep, interfacing with neighbor laboratories and collaborators. The incumbent will provide work direction and teach laboratory procedures to lower levels staff research associates, undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scholars in technical studies.
