Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Performs maintenance and repair on various types of specialized machinery located in waste pumping stations including pumps, electric motors, blowers, gasoline and diesel engines, generators, air compressors, sewage grinders, trash grinders, and other screening and repairs to include the use of shop tools and equipment grinders, drill press, general power tools, hydraulic pulling equipment, and acetylene torches.
  • Performs work using precision measurement tools such as micrometer, dial indicator and torque wrench.
  • Performs work on a variety of odor control systems including chemical and carbon to ensure continuous operation of the odor system.
  • Troubleshoots and determines equipment problem to repair, replace, rebuild, or rehabilitate.
  • Performs corrective and preventative maintenance on pumps up to 600 HP, standby generator, to include starters, water pumps, pre-heaters, etc.
  • Performs location and marking of wastewater force-mains.
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with Wastewater safety programs and guidelines.

Note: Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: Graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education, or completion of a registered apprenticeship program and three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors and other wastewater equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of experience performing various aspects of mechanical maintenance on rotation machinery and electromechanical equipment, diesel powered generators, cranes, structural supports and equipment, and pressurized piping systems.
  • One year of experience diagnosing and tracing hard to locate defects or problems and initiating corrective action.
  • One year of experience in methods, tools, and testing equipment used by mechanics in the repair or overhaul and preventive maintenance of automotive types of gasoline and diesel engine.
  • One year of experience working independently as an industrial mechanic. This requires the ability to make independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions, procedures, and accepted trade practices.
  • One year of experience in plumbing, or other trades related to wastewater equipment repair.
  • One year of experience repairing, replacing, rebuilding, or rehabilitating industrial equipment/machinery. This includes performing minor electrical work such as disconnecting of wire leads from motors or checking voltage with a voltmeter.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to distinguish colors. Ability to use hand tools and lift/slide up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in a variety of work environments such as hot and cold weather and noisy environments, etc. May be exposed to raw waste. Must be able to follow instructions and communicate effectively both oral and in writing. Must be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing to enter permitted confined spaces such as in and out of catch basins and manholes. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by persons who weigh 310lbs. or more. Requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, walk, climb, sit, kneel, reach, crawl, lift, and manipulate materials with manual dexterity, and work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
