Job Description

Position Summary:

The CNC Mill & Lathe Machinist at Atlantic Precision Inc produces machined aerospace parts through programming, setting up and operating the machine; following quality and safety standards; keeping records; and maintaining equipment and supplies.

Role requires the ability to obtain a Secret clearance or higher, due to the nature of work API performs.

This is a first shift / hourly / non-exempt position.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters. Interprets geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Programs mills or lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points, setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches, calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry, proving part programs.
  • Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers, indicating vices, tramming heads.
  • Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position.
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces; adhering to international standards.
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
  • Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Furthers organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to read, interpret and follow specifications on technique cards, job plans, quality control manuals, blueprints and drawings
  • Ability to perform shop math
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining issues as they arise
  • Process Improvement skills
  • Verbal and written communication skills and interact/coordinate with others
  • Knowledge of controls, instrumentation, tooling and set-up procedures
  • Supply Management, Tooling, Coordination
  • Blueprint reading, use of measuring equipment, geometric tolerancing
  • Consistent attention to detail
  • Required to twist, turn, kneel, stoop, bend, and use hands to handle or feel.
  • Capable of lifting/moving 35 pounds

Experience and Education:

  • U.S. Person status
  • GED or High School diploma preferred but not required
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience
  • CNC Machining certificate is a plus
  • Aerospace experience is a plus.
  • Programming experience (Mastercam, Fusion 360, etc) is a plus
