* Temporary staff employees are ineligible to receive benefits (leave, health coverage, State service credit, etc.). They are, however, covered by Worker's Compensation provisions.
However, any non-permanent employee hired to work 30 or more hours per week for three months or more (cumulative of all positions, and not designated as variable hour worker), must be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, within 30 days of their eligibility. Any non-permanent employee hired to work less than 30 hours per week (cumulative of all positions or designated as variable hour worker - i.e. student workers) are measured during designated measurement periods. If they average 30 or more hours per week over a designated measurement period, they will be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan and will be notified of instructions.

Work Schedule
Hours may vary depending on the semester, but applicants can expect to work the same schedule throughout a single semester with emphasis on afternoons and evenings, as well as Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Hours will shift during summer semesters and intercession.
Area 49's hours:
Regular semester: M-Th 8:00am-8pm, Fri 8:00am-7pm, Sat & Sun 11am-7pm
Summer & Intercession: M-F 10-4
Pay Rate 17
Minimum Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience setting up and troubleshooting nontraditional technologies, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, VR headsets, gaming equipment, sewing machines, and more.
  • General computer skills and the ability to troubleshoot computer, copier, scanner, and printer issues.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Experience working in a library or a similar public service point.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service in a library atmosphere.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages and assists with daily operations of Area 49 service points, which include the Area 49 Desk and the Makerspace;
  • Assists with maintenance and troubleshooting, and training of library technologies, especially multimedia equipment and maker technologies.
  • Supervises Area 49 spaces and services, especially on nights and weekends.
  • Be familiar with library services and resources and provide basic reference, technology, public computing, and printing assistance to library users.
  • May conduct workshops on technologies and skills, depending on interest and ability.
