HJF is seeking an Associate Scientist to contribute to several projects within the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU-Surgery) in Bethesda, MD. The scientist will be primarily affiliated with a dynamic team of musculoskeletal researchers from the Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) that conducts fundamental, translational, and clinical studies aimed at developing and evaluating innovative technologies for treating traumatic extremity injuries. The ultimate objective of these endeavors is to generate the knowledge necessary to expedite the clinical application of these therapies.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.



  • Processes and interprets experimental data; formulates hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Conducts scientific observations, maintains detailed laboratory notebooks, and ensures documentation adheres to professional standards.
  • Contributes to project progress reports as needed.
  • Prepares animal use protocols for IACUC review at USUHS.
  • Mentors trainees, including residents, postdoctoral fellows, students, and interns.
  • Disseminates research findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional meetings.
  • Participates in EACE academic activities, including research meetings, seminars, and collaborative projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including required training.


Education and Experience

  • PhD in a related scientific discipline (PhD or D.Sc. in applied physiology, bioengineering, or a related field.).
  • Minimum 0-2 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience after conferral of terminal degree.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of scientific theories and principles.
  • Advanced expertise in neuromusculoskeletal research.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong analytical skills and sound judgment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with diverse research teams.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while working with general guidance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
  • Ability to produce accurate and detailed work.
  • Documented experience using the following techniques:
    • Fluorescence Microscopy
    • Flow Cytometry
    • RT-qPCR
    • Immunoassays
    • Western Blots
    • Cell & Tissue Culture
    • Histological and Immunohistochemical staining
    • Digital Image Analysis
  • Documented experience with research models of Orthopaedic Trauma, including:
    • Aseptic Technique
    • Small/Large Animal Surgery
    • Animal Handling and Injections
    • Anesthetic Recovery

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary/hourly pay range for this position is $57,650-$88,000. Actual salary/hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
