Strategic Communications and Marketing at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a hybrid Multimedia Systems Engineer (Professional Technologist 3). About the Opportunity: The Multimedia Systems Engineer leads the configuration and management of West Virginia University's cloud-based digital signage network for all WVU campuses and partners. In addition, this position works with web applications and other supporting technologies for digital signage software integration, video server databases, and computer systems affiliated with television studio operations. The position should be able to build strong partnerships with campus communicators and be willing to learn a variety of skills related to live multimedia mixed media and studio productions. The Multimedia Systems Engineer is a key member of Strategic Communication and Marketing team, the University's central marketing and communications unit, and reports to the Director of Mixed Media Productions. What You'll Do:
Windows System Administration
- Develop and maintain Windows platform for the server as a host, running the following services: Group Policy, IIS and all necessary software, and connecting with multiple clients
- Test and certify new versions of Windows operating system providing better solutions and integration for all server services
- Integrate the server automation process either by custom scripts or via third-party solutions
- Management of server migration when required
- Maintain and support multi-site Windows environment, including all hardware and software configurations, on the InfoStations domain which includes WVU Morgantown, WVU Beckley, WVU Keyser, WVU HSC Charleston, and WVU Jackson's Mill campuses
- Use strong analytical and logical problem-solving skills to be able to research and correct errors within the system paired with creativity to overcome system limitations
- Understand digital signage software and the requirements within the software including operating system, browser compatibility, file size limitations, etc.
- Adhere to security requirements around the software including patching
- Provide primary support and file tickets with the company around any problems that arise with the software
- Explore new software features that could be integrated into the digital signage network
SQL Server Management
- Configure and manage the development and performance of SQL databases for web applications
- Create complex queries and optimize processes and statements
- Resolve issues with little downtime or data loss through frequent testing and database backups
- Gain insight from end users to help meet requirements and improve development
- Seek methods to improve system efficiency through automated tasks and optimization
Web Development
- Perform programming services using HTML, HTML5, Python, and C++ in webpages
- Test and correct programs and perform programming analysis
- Apply standard programming procedures and recognize interactions of other related programs
- Monitor the operation of programs and respond to problems by diagnosing and correcting errors in logic and coding
- Test, document work, write and maintain operator instructions for assigned programs, and confer with others to obtain or provide factual data
- Provide support in analyzing the present performance of the program and take action to correct deficiencies
- Offer advice to clients when planning new installations
- Maintain positive and timely client communications regarding the status of their project or digital signage players/screens
Video and Multimedia Support
- When necessary, serve as a video engineering technician or production assistant during live multi-camera mixed media productions produced by the Strategic Communications and Marketing Mixed Media Production team. These events may fall outside regular business hours and/or on weekends approximately 6 to 8 times per year to support major university events such as Welcome Week, WVU President's State of the University Address, December Commencement, Decide WVU Spring Recruiting Event, and May Commencement. This may include the lifting and transport of equipment (up to 40 lbs) and may include the installation and extraction of temporary data, video, or audio-cabling systems for live events.
- Assist with the technical integration, installation, and maintenance of specialized television studio production equipment, which may include VOIP (video over internet protocol), DANTE (digital audio network through ethernet), NDI (network device interface), LTN LEAF (transmit or receiving broadcast quality video over internet protocol / 1GB ethernet transport stream), Vizrt TriCaster Vizion (complete computer based video production platform), NewBlueFX Captivate Broadcast (visual graphics production software), Vizirt Flowics graphics software, digital audio mixing consoles, PTZ (point, tilt, zoom) UHD 4K camera set-up/operation, and studio lighting console operation
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, management of information systems, or related field
- A minimum of four (4) years' experience with a combination of the following:
- Web development and supporting programming languages
- SQL database experience
- Windows server experience
- Computer hardware
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of database management, documentation, and project control techniques
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and Windows Server operations
- Proven programming experience
- Must be familiar with digital file formats including WMV, MP4, H265, H264, MOV, AVI, WAV, WMA, MP3, JPEG, PNG, TIF, BMP, GIF
- Knowledge of video streaming techniques and protocols such as RTMP (real time messaging protocol), HTTP, MPEG-DASH and WebRTC
- Extensive PowerShell experience
- Understanding of LAN/WAN/vLAN, TCP/IP, UDP
- Working knowledge of Windows Hyper-V Replication with Hyper-V Server failover enabled to provide high availability and disaster recovery
- Ability to build web pages and web apps that incorporate RSS feeds, live video and server-based video playback
- Knowledge of the processes, workflows, and computer networking tasks that are associated with the management of a cloud-based digital signage network including operations, new player activation, programming, scheduling, content curation, user on/off boarding, playlist or channel management, user permissions, documentation, remote troubleshooting, and managing client relationships to achieve successful outcomes
Preferred Experience:
- Digital signage software and workflow experience, preferably with the Yodeck cloud-based digital signage content management platform
Multimedia production, audio and video capture, and formatting knowledge
- Knowledge of the differences between video formats and standard pixel dimensions such as 480i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and UHD
Knowledge with the Adobe Creative Cloud family of products associated with the video production process, such as Photoshop, Premier, after-Effects, InDesign, and Media Encoder
- Knowledge of the differences in audio signal distribution related to mic-levels (-60db) and line-levels (+4/0db / - 20 db digital) signals and digital metering
