Description
The tax accountant is responsible for the full sales and use tax process including but not limited to preparation and filing sales, use, and B&O tax returns, reconciling general ledger tax accounts, advising on taxability of various goods and services provided to our customers and vendors. Other responsibilities may include preparing and filing business license applications and serving as backup to the fixed asset responsibilities. Scope and Responsibilities: Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Gather, analyze, and provide accurate financial data and supporting schedules to external tax advisors for federal, state, and local tax filings.
- Prepare annual tax provision including computations for book to tax differences.
- Coordinate with external service providers to ensure timely and accurate filing of all tax returns.
- Prepare and file sales & use tax returns, ensuring compliance with applicable jurisdictions.
- Prepare and file property tax returns.
- Assist with quarterly and annual income tax estimates and provisions
- Support information requests for federal, state, and local tax audits.
- Prepare month end tax related entries.
- Maintain fixed asset ledgers, including capitalization, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
- Ensure compliance with ASC 842 lease accounting, including journal entries, reconciliations, and disclosure support.
- Prepare month-end and year-end entries related to fixed assets and leases.
- Prepare year-end tax, fixed asset and lease related audit work papers for annual financial audit
- Reconcile tax related accounts
- Evaluate & respond to Mazak's Tax Department emails and prioritize requests
- Respond to various questions from customers and Mazak employees including questions on taxability, exemption certificates, and tax rates
- Research and solve any sales tax issues from invoicing
- Review and resolve state and local tax notices, and bills sent in the mail
- Assist with the review of Ringi-shos for fixed asset treatment
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field.
- CPA certification preferred (or actively pursuing)
Skills:
- 3-4 years of relevant experience in tax accounting, including federal, state & local, and sales & use tax.
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong written and oral Communication
- Understanding of U.S. GAAP, particularly fixed assets and lease accounting (ASC 842)
- Proficiency in tax compliance and accounting systems (e.g. Vertex and D365 or similar).
