As the Vehicle & Fire Apparatus Mechanic Supervisor IV, you will control the maintenance work operations and supervise skilled and semi-skilled employees in light, medium and heavy vehicles and fire apparatus equipment maintenance.

Vehicle & Fire Apparatus Mechanic Supervisor IV.

Serves in the Airport Equipment Maintenance Division of the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Directly and through subordinate staff, oversees all facets of maintenance and repair of vehicles and fire apparatus used at IAD and the Dulles Toll Road, including light work vehicles, fleet vehicles, public safety vehicles, all fire apparatus including Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), Pumper and Ladder trucks and Medic Units, the Dulles Toll Road fleet, and various small motorized and miscellaneous equipment as assigned. Performs related functions.

Performs a full range of supervisory functions, including planning, assigning, and reviewing work for all shifts. Supervises shift supervisors and/or leaders. Conducts performance evaluations and counseling sessions in accordance with applicable MWAA policies.

Oversees daily operations of the Shop which operates a day and evening shift.

Coordinates planning and scheduling of vehicle and fire apparatus maintenance with the Division Manager and Shop Planner-Schedulers.

Identifies maintenance trends, overruns, repeat repairs, and researches solutions to problems, such as working with manufacturers to modify equipment or parts.

Establishes and is responsible for deadlines and priorities based on work schedules, operational needs, safety, and service priorities.

Coordinates with other divisions and departments to schedule, repair, or replace vehicles or fire apparatus.

Determines the number and types of employees, materials, and equipment needed for assigned work and number of assignments that can be accomplished concurrently.

Manages the assignment of work orders and recurring preventive maintenance functions.

Reviews work orders for accuracy, completion, and status of work as well as accurate reporting of equipment availability.

Makes periodic inspections of on-going repairs and projects and ensures the timely and accurate completion of repairs. Reviews work in progress and upon completion for compliance with accepted trade practices, Orders and Instructions, and safety regulations and rules.

Ensures that rules on safety, conduct, and housekeeping are observed.

Manages time and attendance.

Supervises and assigns all shop employees to duties for special/emergency events such as snow operations, storm recovery and airport sponsored public events.

Reviews and certifies appropriate use of purchasing cards; reviews purchasing records to develop additional stock/store requests for the main and shop warehouses.

Performs duties as assigned as Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR). Reviews or develops statements of work, specifications, and cost estimates and approves or submits requisitions for materials and services, as required.

May assist Mechanics in responding to emergencies and with complex diagnoses or repairs.

Proficient in the use of mechanic hand tools, drills, hydraulic hoists, wheel balancers, brake lathes, battery chargers, calipers, micrometers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, compression test gauges, injector testers, ignition timers, tachometers, ammeters, and ohmmeters to test and repair equipment.

Uses computerized diagnostic tools, wheel alignment machines and various analyzers to test electrical or mechanical components and equipment.

Evaluates the merits of new equipment, tools, and supplies for use in the shop.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Seven years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of light vehicle gasoline and diesel fueled equipment, including substantive work in mechanical, hydraulic systems and components, and electrical troubleshooting.

Knowledge of supervisory principles and ability to manage the operations and programs of the unit/team.

Knowledge of commercial, light automotive equipment and fire apparatus (ambulances, ladder trucks, ARFF vehicles) to supervise Vehicle Maintenance Mechanics.

Skill at the journey level as a Vehicle Mechanic exhibiting the mechanical knowledge in order to maintain, troubleshoot and repair light vehicles, fire apparatus and small engine equipment.

Skill in using tools and interpreting technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, parts catalogues and similar guides.

Skill in estimating amounts and costout supplies and equipment for the Heavy Equipment Maintenance Section to assure adequate inventory and to assist in budget planning.

Knowledge of and ability to apply safety rules, regulations, and procedures to supervise others in working safely.

Ability to analyze data and information.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer and computerized work order and time and attendance systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment including crash/fire equipment, construction equipment, snow removal equipment, police and passenger cars for a public or government entity.

Five years of experience in large-hub airport airfield and snow removal operations.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Type 1 (Small Appliances) and Type 2 (High-Pressure) Certification; certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) as an ASE mechanic; and Automotive Service Education Program (ASEP) Certification.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Education Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL) within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Operates vehicle landside and airside (requires AOA permit).

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.

Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.

May bend, crouch, and work in cramped positions.

May be subject to dust, dirt, grease, slips on oily flooring, and hazardous fumes and substances.

Wears personal protective equipment as necessary.

A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
